He actually turns 40 in nine days time. Holmgren wasn't the only confused about his birthday.

Why, that's less than a fortnight!!

He was 34 at the time of the trade, his extension started when he was 35.

And he was almost 35 and wanted a huge, multi-year deal.

Looking back it seems weird that Holmgren gave him $450K short of $35 million. All that had done is make doing capgeek calculations a pain, and burned the number 4941429 into my brain.

If we bring money into it, G is sucking up 8 mil too. Let's face it, they traded Carter and Richards partially because of money (cap space needed to sign Bryz). And while they got good packages back, none of the players they got back are generational superstars either.

Show me the evidence that McDavid is a generational NHL superstar talent.

Ha! 38, 40, 42 -- it's sad to say because I don't want to rip anyone in particular, but (frank), it's frustrating that a 40-year-old Chris Pronger would've been better than everyone we've got, and a 39-year-old Kimmo Timonen would be damn close.

Which, by the way, he had earned and was still earning when he was injured.

I have little doubt right now that Pronger, at age 38, would still be our best defenseman by a country mile.

- AllInForFlyers

You know, everyone assumes this. But remember, he missed 50 games or so the year before the eye injury due to knee problems, and had back issues as well. I personally don't think it was a given that he'd be able to maintain that level of play.

If your statement is true, it is more likely an indictment of the current crop of defenseman.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that both B. Schenn and Voracek will outscore B. Ryan this year.
- jmatchett383

Pretty confident about Voraceck, and I think Schenn could be closer than most might think, if not outright.

This is mostly semantics but it's some food for thought: how many generational superstars have there ever been? I'd say Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Lindros and Crosby. I'm sure you could make a case for Maurice Richard, Phil Esposito, etc. but I never saw them play obviously so I am hesitant to say.

But that's my point. Assuming we'd have to move assets to fit Ryan under the cap next season, why not take 2 guys who will have no problem filling the net? How much do you really think Giroux would increase his production by? 6, maybe 7 goals?

I can't find any of his NHL stats. Are you referring to the one quote by Crosby saying McDavid at 16 was better than Crosby at 16?

Oh, I see what you did there

No, still my favorite player. Not just Flyer. But player. And favorite since Lindros.

Again, the issue is not with G. It's that I think the Flyers won't compete until these young defensemen are all on the roster, have a couple of years under the belt AND at least one of them is a legit #1.

Would they be better off with a 23 year old superstar or a 30 year old superstar?

Again, you're assuming a player who's never played an NHL game is a surefire superstar. Maybe he's the next Gretzky. Maybe the next Lecavalier. Maybe the next Patrick Stefan. Maybe the next Own Nolan.
