I think it's fair to question if Morin playing against a bunch of 16 year olds would actually be best for Morin's development path. They may be contemplating that right now and need to see him in actual NHL games to get a better read. - Just5
Maybe he can get special exemption to go to the AHL. He's going to kill someone if he goes back to junior. |

Just a brilliant piece of comedy. Barbara Billingsly as the jive speaking grandma - Jsaquella
apparently that scene was completely ad lib. All the sounds those 3 were making they would just make up on the spot, which, considering how fluent it was, is pretty damn impressive. |

See, I totally understand what JSaq just said, and I don't necessarily disagree with any of it. Because that is the most logical course and, all things being equal, it is highly likely that is what will happen, sooner than later.
But what i saw last night...I do tend to lean toward giving him those nine games, knowing that he is raw, for the reasons you listed: He is physically ready to play. I do not dispute that he likely isn't nearly mentally ready for the slog of 82 games.
The problem I see is this: You can see the rawness, but until he goes "live" in NHL games against guys earning paychecks, you can't really tell if he can make some of those adjustments quickly, over the course of games. Yes, that means some exposure and some mistakes that inevitably will wind up in your net or you on the penalty kill. But in this case, i would give him nine games, and not necessarily the first nine of the season, because what he needs most, IMO, are repetitions at NHL speed.
He looks like one of those kids, like Chara, who you just might need to plug into the NHL lineup and grit your teeth through the mistakes as he learns -- IF he is mentally tough enough and mature enough to not get down in himself.
Yes, it is risky. I acknowledge it. But the tools he has...it doesn't have to be this year. Maybe it shouldn't be. But i have this feeling that at some point, with him, you just have to take him live and deal with the learning curve, because physically he just won't be helped much playing in his age group. |

I said last night that he's certainly tall enough for the ride. Exceptions should be made |

If he comes in and kicks ass over the 9 games, I'd be more open to keeping him. I think if he could go to the AHL it'd be ideal, but the Q won't hurt him.

Trust me, at some point, i do think he likely will -- and maybe should, for his mental growth -- go down. I did see mistakes he made. He got caught on a pinch that a veteran wouldn't because he underestimated how quickly even a B-prospect can get to a loose puck in an NHL preseason game, and the same when he held onto a puck too long when the forecheck was bearing down. He misjudged how quickly guys can get on you.
But see, those are the kinds of things you can't get better at in junior, or not entirely at the AHL level, though repetitions at that level would certainly be more helpful than junior.
But what i saw last night was a kid who needs "speed reps." He's gonna have to get turned a few times, stripped on the forecheck a few times, at NHL speed, before the game slows down for him.

If expectations are kept low while he's up. Just move the puck on the 3rd pairing, etc. It's possible he could be best served with the Flyers. I just don't think the Flyers have a solid enough option to pair him with on the 3rd pairing to help him night in and night out. The Q won't hurt, but it's possible it won't help much. It just may be worth the risk of burning a year off his deal. Tough to call right now. |

Very good post. The things that he needs to work on, he really won't get to practice in junior. He will just be busy swatting 150 pounders.

It's true, there are things he'll see in the NHL that can't be replicated in the Q or AHL..
I just don't know that he's ready. He's looked great, and the progress he's made in just a year is awesome. I just want them to err on the side of caution with him

NHL.com just did a piece citing a player being in the hot seat for each team in the East. For the Flyers they picked Mason.
He is the absolute last guy I would put in "the hot seat." right now. Even behind Giroux. All they did was cite his numbers. That doesn't put any of the blame on suspect D and spotty defensive play from the forwards.
Talk about phoning it in. - hereticpride
