MDZ's confidence is a concern. I think that is his main problem. I think the Flyers need to plug him in and see what happens. If he falters and is still not playing at an acceptable level 15-20 games in...you think about bringing up Ghost or another youngster who may be ready to take the leap.
- MBFlyerfan

Agreed. Or if the team has a horrible start or a major long-term injury, you play out the year with MDZ and let Ghost develop.

Oh, ok I see the disconnect.

My point is that they need to send Morin down now because it will require too many moves to keep him, and risking a few waiver losses. It's not worth the 9 games, in my opinion. Especially when you throw in the potential impact to Schenn or MDZ's confidence.

- TheGreat28

It's not unheard of to keep a kid up and not play him. Kings did that w/ Brayden Schenn... milked his 8-game tryout over months. During that time, he got to practice and scrimmage w/ pros.

Maybe.

Essentially, it's what they had to tell their southern, cowboy hat wearing owner at the time because he'd never heard of Vinny Lecavalier.

But you'd still have to carry him on the roster, right? And that necessitates a bunch of moves. So at that point you might as well play him.

Or can he practice with the team but not be on the roster?

It might not be unheard of, but I don't think it's advisable.

I do think young players get better by playing. Practice and watching vets only gets you so far.

He'll be on the roster, count against the cap, but only the games count against the tryout period.

Not saying that's the way to go about it, but just illustrating a scenario where Morin's still here, but Schenn/MDZ aren't losing (much) playing time.

I figured since I brought up Carter might as well bring up Carle as well. LOL

Why are you thinking this?

Right now, without Morin, they are just about over the cap by exactly Pronger's cap hit. So they LTIR Pronger before the season, but leave Timonen on the roster until after start of the season then LTIR him. That gives them Timonen's cap hit for the whole year. They've also maximized Pronger's hit by being over by the exact amount.

- TheGreat28

As I understand it from the capgeek FAQ, if you LTIR just Pronger before the season officially starts that is your upper limit for the season. If you then put Kimmo on LTIR after the season starts, the upper limit will not go up by another $2 million.

That is why Detroit and Pittsurgh last year put all their injured players on LTIR before the season started and exceeded the cap by as much as possible. To get the highest possible upper limit.

Yeah, I agree with John. Doesn't help with the cap. And let's face it, it doesn't seem to have done wonders for B Schenn's development either.

Says "in excess of 50 mil"

That means it's like 7-7.5 mil cap hit.

For 7 years. For Bobby Ryan.

No thank you

Yeah, not sure if that arrangement helped B Schenn all that much in the end...

As long as they don't handle Morin like Buffalo did Grigorenko, I'm find with whatever.

Ok, if the three of you believe it, I'm convinced.

But just to learn me a bit, what's the background? Per Cap Geek, with the current roster (including Schultz/White and excluding Morin) they are over by 4.936 million. Pronger is 4.941 million. They have 24 players on roster too. So they LTIR Pronger before the season and that gets them to the cap without any additional moves.

What am I missing?

- TheGreat28

It gets them $5,000 under the cap with only 12 healthy forwards on the roster and no cap space to recall PEB and/or Jones. That is what you are missing.

If my scenario is correct (and I freely admit that I might be wrong, this stuff is confusing) the Flyers could have 14 healthy forwards, 7 defensemen (and it doesn't matter whether it's Morin or Schultz as the 7th), 2 goalies, and $625,000 in cap space.

Wow it sure seems like the Sens overpaid for B Ryan... So glad its not the Flyers giving him that kind of money. I like the local kid, but Wayne Simmonds gives you a similar level of point production and much more of a physical element for a fraction of the price.

Interesting. If I get some time I'll check it out. I guess I understood it differently. I thought any player put on LTIR before the season was dead space that couldn't be used throughout the year. So any gap between your overage and that player's cap value was lost money.

For example, if the Flyers were over only by 2 million, and the only move they could make was to LTIR Pronger, they would become compliant but could not use the difference (2.9 million) throughout the year. So it was lost money.

That is why they sent some kids down to the Phantoms so they could carry him on the roster day 1, and then when they moved him off via LTIR they got all 4.9 million.

Totally agree.

This team, as currently constituted, will not go further because of Sam Morin. Or Scott Laughton. Or any younger player who people are trying to shoe horn into a reduced role on this team. These guys are young. If they are going to get better, they need to play in different situations and they'll only get that in juniors (in Morin's case) or the AHL (in Laughton's case).
