Well, the bigger question is...what other moves would Holmgren have made that would put us in a bigger cap bind today?
At least Schenn is young and relatively cheap, at least compared to what FA Holmgren would have had to sign to fill the gap back then. - TheGreat28
Sure, we can speculate that all day (and probably will). I get that people are frustrated with the JVR/Schenn trade. I was too and still am. We all wanted a better return, especially if we were trying to upgrade the defense. But if we hadn't made that trade, who would the Flyers be rocking on that third pairing? Danny Syvret?
Schenn has been a disappointment thus far, but I'd still take him and his cap hit over Oskars Bartulis. |

MB and Randy were tweeting about what to do with Morin - keep him or send him back. He didn't think too highly of Randy's response.
To be honest, I do think there was a little bit of 144 character information loss so I can't fully bash Randy. MB's point probably would have made a lot more sense to Randy if he had read our whole chat thread too. |

catching up.
I don't want to see Morin, Hagg, Ghost or even Alt rushed at all. No reason for it.
JVR/Schenn. Still liked getting Schenn. Still hate that it came at the expense of JVR. I just hate moving guys with size, skill and skating ability. just hate it.
Bobby Ryan. would have loved to see him here but 7.25 for 7 yrs? Ummmm no.
Honestly I see this as a playoff team and MAYBE one round in the playoffs if everything goes well. I rather see kids like the above mentioned dmen and the forwards like Laughton, Leier etc get big minutes in the AHL. - nastyflyergirl
Agreed, except that I don't think you can "rush" Alt at this stage. I think he's pretty much a know quantity, yet not necessarily a finished product. |

All I am saying is that, no matter how highly touted a 16/17 year old kid is, there's no proof that he will be a surefire NHL superstar. As such, trading a proven superstar/team captain for said player with 0 games of NHL experience is not wise, at least to me. Others are trying to persuade me that there is 0% chance that McDavid will not be a "generational talent." - jmatchett383
Oh yeah, I agree there are no guarantees. Valid point.

I understand, and said at the time I understand why they needed to make the move at the time. But it's not like they rocked the league with Schenn in the lineup vs. Syvret either.
Heck, maybe we would have gotten Seth Jones if we just kept JVR and Syvret |

I've never had a huge problem with R Miller (I'll take him over Panotch or Carchidi) but I do get annoyed with the severe lack of proofreading that is present in his articles.
I'm not talking just typos, things like incorrect dates and just general incorrect information. It's kind of alarming for a guy with creds. |

Right, but who would be in Schenn's place to improve the defense? If we still had JVR, wouldn't our defense still suck? - mcefalu
I have said over and over again since that trade...
I have no problem with them moving JVR for the right d-man. Honestly, Grossmann has been a much better/more consistent player than Schenn and we got him for a 2nd round pick. Big physical d-men are easier to obtain than dynamic ones. It just so happens we paid a premium for one when it wasnt worth it.

Step 1: Draft player
Step 2: Watch player become star
Step 3: Trade star for younger, unproven player
Step 4: Watch unproven player become star
Step 5: Repeats Steps 3-4 |

I think it's also fair to say that Schenn also hasn't developed as hoped.

Actually, Sim and Stefan have kinda similar numbers until you get to assists:
GP: Sim 469; Stefan 455
G: Sim 75; Stefan 64
A: Sim 64; Stefan 124 (likely because he played with better players than Sim)
Has Jon Sim ever missed on a breakaway towards an empty net? |

Got to remember, playing good in a pre season gameagainst the Hartford Whale, dressed up like the Rangers isn't exactly the same as playing good against the Rangers in a game that counts.
The Flyers have to weigh the long term future of their team & the prospects than being slightly better now. The Flyers have a prime example of rushing a young d-man who impressed early and has had an inconsistent career-Luke Schenn - Jsaquella
