What happened was he was skating parallel to the boards, chasing a puck that was slowly wrapping around. A Cap came in right at the corner of the boards in the D zone, and hit Akeson's outside shoulder blade (the shoulder which was farthest from the boards), which turned him directly into the boards face first.
