I think people also need to realize the vets are just getting their skating legs and trying not to get hurt. The rookies are going all out and looking to impress. There is a different level of play once the regular season begins.
The team should err on the side of caution and just hope the vets get things together to start the season.
A guy like Morin isn't going to save the season if Coburn ends up having a bad year. The season is cooked if that happens. - PhillySportsGuy
Agreed. That is why I would play MDZ tonight, and not Morin (unless you want to sit Schenn). You need to see him one more time to see if he's coasting or spent. |

Why not LTIR all three of the italicized players, and exceed $69 million by as close as possible to the injured players AAV of $7,516,429 with some paper recalls/demotions (bolded)?

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $69,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $75,755,595; BONUSES: $2,000,000
CAP SPACE (26-man roster): -$6,755,595
After Tuesday's 5pm deadline, Hagg and Straka are demoted to create $1.85 million in cap space. Then they can recall PEB and Jones and still have $625K in cap space. - Feanor
Because the cap is calculated daily and there's really no need to do that amount of juggling. Morin is the only slide guy that might need 9 games. Hagg is a slide, but 9 games with the Phantoms will erase that. |

He scored goals for the Flyers too. So what? - GOA88
Far more to his game then scoring goals. Carter is a big time player. He's a horse.

Now, we just need to convince the rest of the free hockey world that, and we can take McDavid with the 12th overall pick and Eichel in the 2nd round

I made this argument when Scott Laughton wasn't outplaying anyone, was just kind of in the mix with guys. That's when you send a guy back.
But what is Morin supposed to do? Not play well because some of the veterans have limitations? If he outplayed both guys on the third pair, and probably one guy in the Top 4, what else is he supposed to do? He can't get older overnight, and the mistakes he is going to make are going to happen no matter when he comes.
How many guys does he have to beat out before he makes a team? - AllInForFlyers
The thing is, all the young defensemen showed areas where they will need to improve. Playing in a developmental system will allow them to do that. The Flyers aren't going to give ice time to Morin if he's hurting the team.
He needs the ice time he'll get in the Q, and Ghost needs the time he will get in the AHL

Carter's gone from very good player to elite goal scorer (minus his 08/09 season with the Flyers). He was always a very good goal scorer, now he's just getting more recognition. A Stanley Cup-winning goal will do that for you. |

Trying to maximize the LTIR cap space using option 2 coming out of camp, has zero to do with the cap being calculated daily. That hasn't even started yet. He's close with that list, but about 750K off. But they may not be able to get as close as they would like.

My point is that Morin beating out guys in preseason is more of an indictment on the current vets than praise for Morin. If this team were the blackhawks and Morin was pushing for top 4 minutes, I would be tremendously impressed.
Going back to Juniors will allow him to work on parts of his game as well. He'll run the PP in Rimouski and he won't get much PP time in Philly.
Luke Schenn came to the NHL and played limited minutes and kept his game very simple. Unfortunately, keeping things simple never allowed him to develop his game in any other area. In juniors, he would have had the opportunity to do more. |

My take on the trade at the time was that it was a short-term plug to the D because of other poor personnel decisions. I understood why they did it, but I thought long-term the club would regret it.
My argument was simple - JVR had a much higher ceiling than Schenn. A 1st line winger, potential all-star, trumps a physical, stay at home defenseman. Some argued that Schenn, as a former 5th overall pick, had as high an upside.
Doesn't seem to be the case. - TheGreat28
Especially when you consider one is talked about as a potential scratch for a 19 year-old and the other is a 1st liner and top contributor to his team.
I said it then and I will say it now. You dont trade dynamic unless you are getting dynamic back. JvR was always going to be more of an impact player than Schenn. Horrible move. |

This falls short by about 750K of maximizing the LTIR cap space. - MJL
Yes, I can't come up with a way to fully maximize it with the contracts we have.
When Kimmo was healthy the contracts lined up perfectly to get within about $50K of maximizing LTIR cap space. But MDZ makes $700K less than him. |

Well we can trade Read and throw-in a 5th round pick for some marginal player who we subsequently bury on the Phantoms for 2 years. |
