What I guess I'm getting to is... if he ain't on the team this year don't hold your breath for big things. They probably aren't coming.
- mayorofangrytown

Define "big things." Is a top-4 defensive shutdown player who can chip in occasional offense (5-7 goals, 15-20 assists) "big things?"

2 words:

Ryan

Also, 2 players from that draft class, Karlsson and Carlson, played in non-CHL leagues prior to their draft.

- jmatchett383

Both were playing in the NHL the 2nd year after their draft. Karlsson played one yr for Frolunda. Carlson was eligible to play in the AHL but made the Caps the same yr.

I would consider Luke Schenn big things.

Nice time to try to cut across the crease there, 5. And dominating box out there, 47.

(I'm sure Mase appreciates the triple screen, too.)

How many teams in the NHL have a more inadequate top pairing?

I cant agree with that. Just cause Hextall decided to send Morin down that does not mean he deserved it. Morin was impressive. If contracts were'nt an issue he would be playing this season.

Right, I was just affirming what you said re: lesser players.

So it sounds like you think Morin should stay with the big club this year then?

- mcefalu

I didn't think he would actually but now that I look around at the Sbisa thing the amount of time a Defenseman stays in junior certainly correlates to his Pro career and it smacks you in the face when you look at it like that.

Weber, Pietrangelo, suter and others spent 2+ seasons in the minors/juniors. They turned out ok.

So because the Flyers would rather have him play in juniors a second year instead of banking on a rookie playing 82 games, he's destined to be a bust?

Morin just turned 19. Duncan Keith was 22 his rookie year, Drew Doughty 19, Chara played 25 games at 20 and his first full year at 22, Erik Karlsson was 19, Shea Weber played 28 games as a 20 year old. These are the guys that are better than Morin is expected to be too. I don't think him not playing this year means that he won't be a really good player. I still think it's reasonable to believe he could be a top pairing shut down defenseman.

Likewise, Luke Schenn is a superstar because he made the NHL at 18.

Please do not rush the kids, Morin will be a much better pro down the road by spending another year in junior. I hope the Flames do not rush Bennett or the leafs not rushing Nylander. Remember Gilbert Brule, lol Jackets ruined him.

Hextall trying to erase the Holmgren gaffes one by one. He's going to need an industrial size eraser. Cmon Hexy, find a destination for MacDonald. Edmonton? Calgary??.... A South Jersey landfill if need be.

That was a good choice then but still need some depth on D. One or two injuries and Ray Emery will be the sixth dman, lol

Anybody know who's on waivers in the NHL? Aside from Rosehill and VandeVelde.

Okay, so this whole "top pairing shutdown" thing is odd to me. These term "top pair" and "shutdown" are different players. A "top pairing guy" is a perennial all-star candidate who puts up very nice point totals and offsets and defensive deficiencies he may have by a wide margin due to his defensive and offensive contributions to the team.

A "shutdown" defender is a player whose main responsibility is to prevent goals from being scored and is not counted on to provide much offense. He is basically a stay-at-home defender. If a "shutdown" defender does this but also contributes a good deal of offense, he is not simply a shutdown defender, he is a "top pair" defender.

It's like saying Jake Voracek is a top-line grinder.

Top pairing because he could chip in some offense and compliment a more offensive-minded player (Ghost or Sanheim hopefully)
