Rinaldo may have a play date partner.
Devils apparently will be signing Tootoo. |

If Streit manages to keep up his level of play for the rest of that contract and avoid injury it will be a pleasant surprise. I wont hold my breath on that though.
We can disagree that's fine, I think those 4 contracts are anchors and look forward to being rid of them when the time comes. - flyer_nutter

LeCavalier, Macdonald, Streit, and 1 of Umberger/Hartnell.
The Flyers should look at themselves first and foremost imo.
Just have to be selective that's all. Wait for the right move instead of the best thing at the time. Hopefully Hextall is free to do just that and not have pressure/input coming from above. - flyer_nutter
I took your statement to mean league-wide.
Sure, the Flyers could use a little restraint in the contract department. I'd like to see them try.

The issue isn't not signing player to long contracts. Because there is no award for unused cap space. The idea is not to stop signing players to long term contracts, but to sign the right players to long term contracts. |

Haha I think Streit will be a good soldier but I don't expect it to hold course for the whole rest of that contract. He's grown on me after a poor start with the club, I will give him that.
I am also a big fan of Grossmann, but that's all the positive vibes I'll give you for one day. |

The Streit signing has been huge for the Flyers. The final year or two may be a disaster, but offensive defensemen seem to last longer in this league. And he can always be bought out, if necessary. |

I think Streit got a reasonable deal. MacDonald they likely jumped the shark on. I never understood the Lecavalier deal. The day they signed him, I was scratching my head, given that they had Giroux, Couturier and Schenn up the middle with Laughton in the pipeline. Vinny had missed 44 games the previous 3 seasons (played 168 of 212 games) and had played 14 NHL seasons. He was 33 but 14 years of NHL competition with a known injury history makes that an old 33. The cap hit was manageable for his skill level but the term cancelled that out, IMO. The fact that he struggled last year was just salt in the wound. |

League wide would be a start but you will always have desperate GMs I think.
Just about being selective and doing your homework on which players to break the bank for. Hell if you want to throw the remains of Hextall's thinning hair and Holmgren's bicycle at Stamkos or Kopitar in 2 years if they hit UFA go all in. Just stay the hell away from guys Buff or Kesler who hit UFA in the same year.

He's been much better than I thought he would be. Really loved him in his time with the Habs but wasn't sure how much he would have had left in the tank.

Have to look at the injuries. I think most of the games were missed due to broken hands. That's not something that you worry about being chronic.
If he bounces back, nothing wrong with the deal. |

He deserves to get a chance, he has a great one-timer. It could very well be a great confidence boost if he gets off and running to a good start. |

Unless he goes the Hartnell divorce route and gets lonely in his hotel room on long road trips. |

Beautiful way to get something out of nothing. Hopefully he puts in enough that some foolish team wants to take him on around deadline time. |

It goes back to the Briere era. Goals against are as big of a factor as goals for. |

I hope that the 4th line demotion last year helps him buy-in to the 5v5 system. |

He's missed a lot of time the past four years though. It's possible the injuries are taking their toll. If not, he's still been in the league for 14 years (15 now) and that's a lot of wear and tear. He had already played over 1,000 NHL games before coming here. There was bound to be a dip in play in the near future.
Nevertheless, I think Vinny will bounce back somewhat. He could get to around 0.65 and possibly to 0.70 points per game this year. But what about down the road? He could become an albatross given the factors I've mentioned.

I believe that Umberger is at best a slight upgrade on Hartnell 5v5, he's not some crazy speedster Selke candidate that some people make him out to be. If he doesn't come close to matching Hartnell's production (or to have a net positive in production based on other players getting chances), then the trade-off may not be worth it, at least in the short-term. Looking at it strictly from an offensive point of view, it's a bad trade. Whether or not the other differences in their games offsets that is yet to be seen. |
