Must be that huge market Pittsburgh plays in that gives them an advantage over the rest of the NHL. - PLindbergh31
No, that would be Malkin and Crosby.

Small market team. Some how they were able to roll their pennies and match the Weber offer sheet though. |

I'm not saying Bylsma is Scotty Bowman, but the guy was a coach for a team that won a Stanley Cup. That usually buys you a pretty substantial grace period. - PLindbergh31
he got a pretty good amount of rope. and i would argue that it was more HOW they lost, more than simply just THAT they lost. |

Yep. And as such, their level of play has dropped 2 straight seasons since. They abandoned their value idea and instead adopted the 1 star player and spare parts approach. |

Wow, they do sound pretty cool. So what are you waiting for? Plenty of space on the Predators bandwagon and in their blog comments here. And I bet their GM has never made a bad trade in his life. |

I'd agree with you on all accounts. However, this Pittsburgh team was constructed to be a dynasty for years. The fact that they've failed to even win an ECF game in 5 years is unacceptable. - jmatchett383
I agree with you. I think part of the issue has been the structure of the team with the cap. Too much high priced talent. Malkin is a super star in his own right and paid as such. Fleury, Letang are paid handsomely but do they deliver enough? As a result, they have to pare down the talent around them and lack depth. |

Or the fact that they drafted 2 elite centers, a good (not great) goalie, a very solid and replenishable defense, and a strong supporting cast. |

You mean with their new approach, they won't be able to win one playoff series in the next 15 years? |

I'd like to know if they'd do that again. Since they matched, it's been two non playoff years so I can't expect they're rolling in dough. |

Yeah, but they tanked to do it. And actually got the first pick in the draft when they did. So it doesn't count. |

Very few teams can accomplish what Detroit has since 97.. having said that, I'd take a cup win in 2009 and be very content over how long it's been for the Flyers. I do think we're on a much better path now trying to win by drafting well. - Hextall271
i didnt want to sound like i wasnt glad or grateful that they won in 2009. but the manner in which they have underperformed has been very frustrating.
and yes, i do think the flyers are on a much better path. while i dont think either of the PA teams are exactly clear favorites to win it this year, i do think they each have a solid window left of anywhere from 5 to 7 years where they can get things going around their top centers. |

I think that if the Flyers had a true #1 defenseman and maybe a solid #2 (basically to replace Pronger and Timonen of 2010 time frame), they have the forward and D to come out of the east. Hell, you throw Doughty in the mix all by himself and i'd take my chances.. lol |

throwing doughty onto the flyers current roster, without having to send anything back/not worry about salary implications?
yeah. id say theyd have as good a chance as anyone in the east under that circumstance. |

Doesn't even have to be Doughty. Just swap MacDonald with Bouwmeester and the team would be top 6 in the East. |

I think he's basically saying swap AMac or Schenn for Doughty. Not that it's feasible, but just if we had been able to draft/land him instead. |
