Sorry if I missed this yesterday, but who is alternate captain other than 17? |

While I had no problem with Smith getting the captaincy (he deserved it), I'm not really a fan of the "bridge" captain, a la Derian Hatcher. I think it should command a bit more prestige and reverence. |

Not a bad choice I suppose. I figured it'd go to Coburn pretty much due to longevity. |

Right here! If you watched the retrospective last night? Did you notice they eliminated any mention of Leviathan?
Just skipped over it as if it never happened. |

The Flyers always seem to name a captain. They don't do the three As and no C like some teams. After Primeau it was Forsberg, Hatcher, Smith, Richards, Pronger and now Giroux. You could make a case for Forsberg, Hatcher and Smith just being given the C for the sake of having a captain. All three were deserving players (Hatcher and Smith wore the C before) but they were older and on short deals. |

Absolutely. Getting rid of the Hartnell contract, the necessary evil was taking back a dead man walking. - PLindbergh31
Would have rather have kept Hartnell, but this gives Brayden Schenn his chance to shine. |

Streit's a former captain. It's well-deserved. |

After all this time with the team and Coburn gets the A in preseason and that's about it. Makes me think he doesn't want it and/or he's not the kind of leader. Streit was a captain before at least, as was Timonen. Jagr and Talbot even wore the A over Coburn and they weren't here nearly as long. Both those guys had wore a letter before as well, Jagr having been a captain. |

Just slightly premature. - MJL
Not sure it's premature with the dozen or so games I watched from Columbus last season...he looked to be a shell of his former self last year. |

I just felt it wasn't enough for a full season. It should have been a story arc and that's it.

How has Hartnell been so far with Columbus? I cant find any sites that list preseason stats.

Wasn't Columbus going to use a compliance buyout on Umberger before the Flyers traded for him? I really liked Hartsy as a team guy and he scored some big goals as a Flyer...shame he couldn't stay on his feet and avoid the dumb penalties. Casualty of the cap ala Scottie Upshall |

Not sure that's really relevant...I wasn't talking about Hartnell's play this year! Only what I saw in the preseason and last year from Umberger. |

That's my only big issue. If they wanted to do a Hartnell for Umberger trade, then fine. But why not trade Hartnell for the pick, have CBJ use a CBO on Umberger and have a handshake deal in place? Probably violates the CBA, but that's nothing new. |

He didn't have a good year -- and wasn't healthy -- but still led the team in power play goals (eight). I know he got a clean bill of health over the summer but I worry more about him holding up physically than about being a vet with a guaranteed roster spot who had a very quiet preseason.

I'm with you Bill...my worry is that he didn't look good physically. Goals, assists and points in preseason mean very little and it'd be a shame if he plays poorly after requesting to leave Columbus. |
