Don't want to read too much into them but basically looks like the opposite of everything I wanted to happen. Kapanen, Sundqvist, and Harrington didnt make the club, Ebbett, Sill, and Chorney potentially remain the on NHL roster?
I hope I'm completely wrong but, man, I'd much rather see some of these guys with higher ceilings get their shot. |

I liked my math better, but once Chorney, Sill & Ebbett get recalled, here is what the opening night roster looks like:
Forwards (14):
Crosby
Kunitz
Dupuis
Malkin
Honrqvist
Kapanen
Sutter
Comeau
Spaling
Downie
Ebbett
Goc
Adams
Sill
Defense:
Letang
Ehrhoff
Martin
Maatta
Despres
Scuderi
Chorney
Bennet & Bortuzzo on LTIR
But you gotta think that Kapanen gets officially sent back to Finland tomorrow, right? |

I don't mind Chorney if he's going to the #7 to start... Better Harrington in WBS playing top pairing minutes then eating pretzels with Zack Sill.
But all the talk about how much the Pens forward prospects have improved, and the obvious depth at defense, and like you said, the guys making it (Ebbett, Sill & Chorney) are pretty disappointing. |

I'm not super familiar with the Pens cap situation, and I didn't really look at the moves, but it's worth noting that when you're entering the season with an LTIR situation, you either want to be under the cap (including LTIR eligible players), or using as close to all of the LTIR allowance as possible on your opening roster.
I'm not sure if that helps explain any of the moves, but there it is. |

Good point on Chorney.
The forward thing is just peculiar because they should at least get the 9 game tryout first, imo. Then decide what to do with them. Oh well, there's a reason I'm not an NHL GM. |

So if we're even with the cap, then Bennett on LTIR gives us 900k in flexibility? Sure would be nice if Scuderi was on LTIR.... |

Yeah... the only LTIR guys that have are Bennett and Bortuzzo, and that's only $1.5 mil total. You only get LTIR relief if you are within that of the ceiling.
So if you are $2 mil below the cap, putting them on LTIR doesn't give you anything.
If you are $1 mil below the cap, you will essentially raise the ceiling (while they are on LTIR) $500k.
If you are right at the cap limit, you would get the full $1.5 mil of relief.
So the idea is, to get as tight up against the cap ceiling possible before you designate those guys as LTIR. |

This isn't the last of the moves. In no way would Zach Sill and Andrew Ebbett play in Wheeling when they both would be playing as alternate captains in WBS. This is a salary cap move and will be reversed pretty quickly. I tend to think that Harrington will be in Pitt as well. |

LTIR is tricky. You either want to wait until after the season starts to tap into the LTIR allowance, or use as much as possible on the opening roster. |

Tweeted (and translated) from Roman Jedlicka today-
Jaromir Jagr on his facebook:
"Today it is exactly 24 yrs ago when I scored my 1st NHL goal. That time I had long hair, I was quick and Ds were slow. And now? I have short hair, I am slow and Ds are quick. You can't stop the time."

If you're cap compliant on your opening roster, you can tap into the full allowance. If you're over the cap and tapping into LTIR on the opening roster, you're limited to only using that portion of the LTIR allowance.
For example, let's say the Exampleburgh Strawmen have a roster that totals up to exactly $69,000,000 when healthy. However, star forward John Doe, who has a $5,000,000 cap hit (he's really great), shattered his spine in a freak ironing accident and will be out indefinitely. The Strawmen sign forward R.E. Placement to a one year, $3,000,000 cap hit.
They publish their opening night roster at $72,000,000 on the cap, using $3,000,000 of the LTIR allowance. Because they entered the season using the LTIR, they cannot use the remaining $2,000,000 allowance. If they had waited to LTIR Doe and sign Placement until after the season started, they would still have that $2,000,000 available.
At least, that's how I understand it. |

It's worth noting a couple other nuances with LTIR:
-If you finish the over the cap, but with remaining LTIR allowance, that allowance does not cover bonuses. Bonus dollars will count against the cap the following season, even if there were enough LTIR dollars to cover all bonuses.
-Unlike unused cap space, unused LTIR dollars aren't "banked" like unspent cap dollars. Cap space is calculated daily, allowing a small amount of space to be used to fit larger cap hits after the trade deadline. LTIR allowance dollars unspent simply vanish, as if you were at the salary cap. |

Today doesn't mean anything yet for Thursday and certainly not for April when things matter most. The moves made us as close to the cap as possible. Things will go down quickly tomorrow. The roster isn't set |

He's really not that great of a C. Faceoffs and back checking are characteristics of a C, Those are probably his biggest flaws. |

Kap is gone, he's on the roster as a procedural thing. From the moves, our real roster (with my guess at lines) is:
Kunitz - Sid - Duper
Downie - Geno - Hornqvist
Spaling - Sutter - Comeau
Sill - Goc - Adams
Ebbett
(If Geno is out, he goes to 13 and the centres move up)
Ehrhoff - Letang
Maatta - Martin
Scuderi - Despres
Chorney
When Bort comes back, Chorney will go down; when Bennett comes back, Ebbett will go down. Despres and Bortuzzo are still fighting for a spot unless Scuds is moved and Adams has a roster spot unless Sill blows him out of the water. We're getting there, but those two are still big black holes.

Malkin is playing wing right now at practice and looks to start the season there for just a few games. He missed a lot of time and needs a simpler assignment to get used to the system.
