Not sure why it would be an issue, unless his role would involve input on suspensions, which is a question of competitive fairness. Lappy worked a job for the Flyers during his LTIR run.
- Jsaquella

I'm sure they'll see a potential conflict of interest in being a part of the NHLPA as well as working for the NHL. I don't think it will be a real issue though.

It would be a nice gesture to Pronger for him to get to have real closure instead of having to wait around for years.
- NickTheKid87

It would also help the Flyers. It would free up $4.91mm every summer for free agent/trade additions, it would free a roster spot that is currently filled by Pronger's deal, it would allow them to avoid the ridiculous LTIR charade every fall and if thy could just continue to pay Pronger either out of their own books or via insurance, he gets his money and can move on with his life, be it a league job or a job with a team or growing pumpkins.

The only ones who would be hurt might be the owners, because unless it counted as part of the split with the PA, there'd be $5mm less they get their paws on.

Tampa might be annoyed. They have been carrying Ohlund around on LTIR for even longer than we have been dealing with Pronger.

So dumb.

Can we just pay this man his money and have everyone move on?

The NHL already caved on giving the Devils back their first round pick for the Kovalchuk contract.....why not cave on this when it's PAINFULLY OBVIOUS that the system is just being gamed in this situation?

- johndewar

Not sure why you think it's painfully obvious, but the system is not just being gamed in this situation.

The NHL in the case of Kovalchuk situaiton, simply just did what was best for all parties involved.

summer was certainly better than this semester has been. the whole oh your second year is easier than the first year notion is a total sham. but yes, beyond excited/anxious for hockey to be back. Hope all has been well on your end.

Only three more years barring the league granting an exception. This is an extenuating circumstance and I think the league should have already granted some type of cap exception for Pronger but what can you do

Boston would probably want Savard to get similar treatment too

Yeah, but Ohlund isn't an Over 35 deal. Pronger is. Ohlund could technically retire and be off the books. Not so for Pronger

Indeed. There can't be a special exemption made for Pronger.

That is why there is the 10% off season exemption to cover that. And Pronger is not taking up a roster spot. He is however taking up a contract slot in the 50 contract max list.

And the latter is exactly why it wouldn't be done. It's simply giving the players extra money outside of the system.

Savard's not an over 35, though. In Pronger's case, retirement means dead cap space for the Flyers.

Speaking of which:

@TSNBobMcKenzie · 4m 4 minutes ago
Here's an interesting question: Could Chris Pronger remain on PHI's LTIR and at same time work for @NHLPlayerSafety? Perhaps we'll find out.

@TSNBobMcKenzie · 39s 40 seconds ago
It's believed @NHLPlayerSafety has interest in Pronger, and vice versa, but his status on LTIR requires attention. NHLPA is involved.

The Flyers could possibly move him to a team at the salary floor after this season, although the league could nix such a deal

It's not an extenuating circumstance. It's an injury. There is no reason for the League to grant the Flyers or any other team an exemption to the LTIR rule. And by putting the LTIR rule in place, they are already giving the team an exemption to replace the player.

Savard's contract comes under the recapture rules, so if he retired Boston would have dead cap space, too.

Samsies with Ohlund. If I'm Boston or Tampa, I definitely take issue with an exemption for only Pronger.

Ahhh, forgot those. Yeah, I guess Boston would want the same exemption for Savard. I get the reasons why it's not done, but it would be nice if they could petition for an exemption in these cases
