Which is why this whole charade is ridiculous anyway.
Find a way to grant an exception so everyone is made whole. The NHL made an exception for the Devils in the Kovalchuk mess and they can make one here. - johndewar
I propose we gather 15,000 or so Flyers fans, paint our faces orange and black, remove out trousers and undergarments, and march on the NHL offices and demand satisfaction. |

i would argue that the underlying concepts and principles are so interwoven with the hypothetical itself that it is difficult to distinguish one from the other. regardless, they all require an acknowledgement of possible solutions, or at the very least, a reflection of why the hypothetical was proposed.
in either case, learning occurs. and a wise man on PBS once told me that time's never wasted as long as you learned something. - stayinthefnnet

It doesn't defeat the purpose though. The cap isn't in place to keep players from retiring and from hampering teams from moving on. Pronger and Savard are suffering from concussion issues that will plague them for the remainder of their lives. I don't see how letting them retire while still paying them and everyone getting their share of the money defeats the purpose of the cap. We're not talking about excepting all players that get hurt, like Lecavalier breaks his foot and we can get rid of him. - NickTheKid87
Marc Savard and Chris Pronger are free to retire at any time. The Cap doesn't prevent them from retiring. Nor does it hamper a team from moving on. The mechanism's put in place such as the off season exemption, and LTIR, help a team to move on from an injured player, not hamper them.
The purpose of the cap is to limit salaries paid to player. Cap accounting is done to keep track of how much of HRR is paid to players, and that the correct split of money is paid to the players. Paying players and not counting them as part of the HRR split is contradictory to that.
Every year at this time, the same complaints are registered. Most of them such as players being kept from retiring, are false.

This has nothing to do with it being complicated. It's mostly so Pronger can live his life and the Flyers can move on. If it makes you feel good that you understand it and others don't, that's fine, but I don't see that as being the main issue being raised by those who would like an exception. - NickTheKid87
Pronger is living his life, and is being paid, and the Flyers have clearly moved on from the player.

Cool. I hope Pronger takes a job as a coach soon. I bet he'd make a good junior head coach or maybe an assistant somewhere.
Since the Flyers have moved on from the player. |

You do realize that people say "not allowed to retire" as shorthand for "not retiring due to long-term salary cap implications for the parent club, as well as the player not receiving his agreed-upon salary?"

You know what we mean. Not literally being kept from retiring but everyone knows if they do they screw over the team.
While many of us would like to see an exception, it's not that big of a deal if there isn't one from a cap perspective. That being said, there's not really a downside to all the suggested exception scenarios we've seen either. |

I'm actually wondering how Pronger, one of the dirtiest players of the last 2 decades, is offered a job relating to player safety...unless they figure he can tell the, what NOT to allow. |
