He can be traded (assuming the other team does not demand he pass a physical) but not waived, you're right.
Edit: BiggE has the right idea. - jmatchett383
He doesn't necessarily have to be waived... anything that violates an SPC is grounds for termination. Refusing an assignment is one... I'm sure there are others.
Another note: NHL has to approve any mutual termination, so.... |

So the NHL can tell him he's not allowed to retire? |

Replacing Grossmann with Ghost as a drop-in worries me. Grossmann has his deficiencies, but they're completely different types of players. - jmatchett383
If Grossmann goes down, he won't be replaced by Ghost. There is no way they will ice a lineup with MDZ, Streit and Ghost all in it. If Grossmann gets hurt, Schultz will probably get 1st crack at his spot, followed by Alt or Manning. |

The league isn't going to let the Flyers do anything but put him on LTIR. They make up the rules as they go and if they can keep the Flyers shuffling over that contract they will. - mayorofangrytown

So you think they score 264 goals while giving up around 220-225? That's pretty optimistic. I think 245-250GF and 230-235GA is more likely. - BiggE
This is best case scenario and I'm not really accounting for major injuries or guys totally falling off. Mostly I was just throwing numbers out there. |

So, theoretically, you're telling me he could go into a coma and/or die, and the NHL could (theoretically) refuse to let him be retired from hockey? |

Slow day at work. Point predictions!
Giroux - 80 GP, 28 G/66 A/94 Pts
Voracek - 81, 30/41/71
Lecavalier - 71, 26/34/60
Simmonds - 77, 27/30/57
BSchenn - 82, 23/33/56
Couturier - 82, 19/35/54
Read - 75, 22/27/49
Streit - 79, 7/37/44
Umberger - 72, 18/24/42
Raffl - 78, 14/25/39
Akeson - 63, 11/22/33
MacDonald - 82, 5/27/32
Bellemare - 73, 7/15/22
Del Zotto - 60, 3/19/22
Coburn - 81, 2/13/15
Rinaldo - 67, 4/8/12
Grossmann - 71, 1/11/12
Jones - 37, 5/5/10
LSchenn - 64, 2/7/9
Schultz - 17, 0/1/1
Mason - 66 GP, 2.58 GAA/.915 SV%

These look really good. Only thing I'd say is that Streit nets at least 10 goals with increased PP time |

They're makin' up rules... sometimes we like, sometimes not so much.

That's how I'd see it. Schultz if there's a game or two right around the corner, and one of Alt/Manning if there's a long stretch where he'll be missing and they have time to get there (wherever the game is) and practice. |

The best (worst) thing about that was that they made up the rules, and then decided to revise their made-up rules years later. |

That's probably true too. Might also lower the point totals of the fourth liners a smidge |

Its not just about offensive talent. You need to defend as well. I wouldn't be comfortable using Streit, MDZ or Ghost on the PK or late in a game against top 6 forwards while protecting a lead. Grossmann's role on this team is to provide D and kill penalties. If you're going to replace him, you need to replace with someone who can do at least some of what he does. That would not be Ghost. Now if Streit or MDZ get hurt, hell yeah, get Ghost up here!

Maybe, but if he's not playing on the #1 pp unit, that will be tough. I think he comes close though, maybe 26-27 goals and 55-58 points. |
