I just worry about this defense when they're forced to play against better offenses. They gave up 5 goals to what will likely be a bad offense.
- PhillySportsGuy

I worry about the combination of a very mediocre defense combined with a team that sometimes views team defense the way a Michael Bay movie views a cognizant plot....something that's nice to have but doesn't always apply to them.

I view the defense, as a couple of guys who are very solid number 3's(Coburn & Streit), three guys suited to being 4/5s (MacDonald being slightly ahead of Schenn & Grossmann) and a wildcard (Del Zotto). There's 6 NHL defensemen there, but there's too much being asked of most of them n a game in and out basis.

Hard not to worry -- I agree that they could play better, but at the same time, no team loses its No. 1 pair and doesn't feel it

MacDonald didn't play badly tonight, and Schultz was more mobile than I thought

The rest of it was just...I don't even know. I don't even know how you wind up -5 and you can legitimately say that it wasn't all on you, but that's what Luke Schenn could say and because he can, you have to be worried

- AllInForFlyers

I personally don't think any of the defenseman were that bad overall. Certainly some moments such as Grossmann getting beat wide by Jagr leading to a penalty, and a few other plays. Forwards lost players on the back check, lost guys around the net. I see it as team breakdowns more then a defenseman issue.

The MacDonald/Schultz pairing that had everyone worried was actually solid. Shultz played well, and I thought MacDonald was strong all game.

The MacDonald that has played to this point is far better then a 3rd pair defenseman. How anyone can in any way label him a 3rd pair defenseman in this League is mind boggling. He was very strong tonight.

I just picked a perennially good football program, that's all. Replace it with Florida or Oregon or anyone else, if it makes you feel better! Nothing against the school itself!

EDIT: I see your comment now. I'm in trouble

Have to take something back. I put a lot of blame on Giroux for the Elias goal. Finally saw the complete replay. Voracek left his man to try for the puck which Del Zotto had stopped at the blueline. Zidlicky, who Voracek had on the back check, continued to the net, after Voracek left him, and Giroux was caught all alone in between two guys. Put it more on Voracek then Giroux. Steit also made a bad pinch.

The problem is, at it's root, is that the team and the individual players on it, are plagued by inconsistency. That inconsistency manifests itself in terms of performance and intensity.

Unfortunately, it's not a new story.

That goal was effing infuriating, because Del Zotto stopped the puck at the blueline -- how a guy winds up all alone in front of the net is effing infuriating

I'm certainly not hitting the panic button yet, but the Flyers definitely need to get their heads out of their asses. They certainly will not go anywhere unless they realize they have to play a complete 60 minute game.

No official word yet from WPG on Evander Kane's apparent knee injury but there is considerable concern on degree of severity.

Some of these guys are still young/inexperienced/new, but those excuses have to hit an expiration at some point, right?

And then some of these other guys... just aren't good hockey players.
