he gave a well formatted response to the mason hate - 2Real
Ha! I love Steve Mason. I think that guy is legit.
But I didn't love No. 5 last night. That's just me being honest, not critical of him as a player -- that guy's saved the Flyers' asses just about more times than I can count, now

Glad to hear it. So we understand that you don't need to have played the position to make a criticism of a player on the play then? - MJL
no we don't. and who's we? you and the whole room? you and opeth? it also doesn't mean that opinion is a truly informed one, or a correct one.
given that i've played the position for over 30 years, at a high level, and still study the position on a daily basis, forgive me if i take my point of view on the subject over someone who's never so much as stepped on the ice let alone alone attempted to play the position, especially when the original post essentially said mason sucked.

I don't think it's an automatic save, but it's one he should make, and he should've made. I don't think you have to be a goalie to know all of the variables involved there. It's a pretty basic play. And even a casual fan can see those variables. It's not a clear cut 2 on 1. Voracek is in good position on the back check. There still is potential for a pass, but Mason should trust his defense on that play, and concentrate on the shooter.
I agree that a Goalie is going to say that he needs to make that save. But in this case, it's not just talk. It's a save he has to make. And it's not really a difficult one either. And yes, sometimes goalies do get beat on make-able saves. Part of the game. But the best goalies make that save in that situation. - MJL

I don't think the issue is who is right or wrong, it's all of a sudden applying the standard that if you haven't played the position, then you don't know what you're talking about. I happen to agree with his opinion on the play.

He's out and square to the shooter, and knows the shot is coming. He just missed it. And short side to boot. Mason knows he should've had it. It's a save a top NHL goalie makes a larger percentage of the time.
And to be clear, I'm not blaming, and will not blame Mason for the loss. He's been arguably their best player in the first two games. |

Guys that have played, do have different perspectives......they understand it's not a video game....it is not perfect, it can not be broken down into strict analytic stats, not matter how many try....there's the human element.
Guys that have played and coached get that.....most comments on here can be taken with a grain of salt if you've never actually played. |

Absolutely; it does happen. We can agree to disagree on how bad it was, though -- and while I nitpick poop too and definitely will again, I'm not certain what else there is to say about that particular goal when all of us know that the Flyers are going to give up anywhere between 200-300 goals this season
Nature of the beast, on this one -- just came at an inopportune time |

Because people that haven't played NHL hockey and only watch it don't understand ?
Well great, who on this forum has played in the NHL because i can bet you just about all of us have played hockey all of our lives , outside of video games, and are just as qualified to make a statement on an obvious missed save at a critical time .
In all my posts I said the same thing..Forwards take the brunt of the blame last night, Mason needs to make that save and yes..it was a garbage goal when you look at all the circumstances of the play. That is not an indication on Mason as a person, as a professional or anything else other than at that moment he gave up a really bad goal. |
