Where's the muscle on that team to put Gillis in his place?

Sad...

Just wow.

To say the education system as a whole isn't shot makes me wonder about people.

The education system and healthcare system have one major thing in common. They are both as a whole shot with buck shot.

You have Buffalo school teachers making 60+k a year yet the students can't read. That is not only on the parents(something rarely said) but on the teachers.

The statement some make that teachers aren't paid enough is a joke. They work 40 weeks a yr (that means they have 12 weeks off((for a good portion PAID!!!!) not counting all the bs days/weeks they get off (again PAID!)mind you during those 40 weeks). Then a good portion of those teachers work serving jobs in the summer and make bank.

I feel no sorrow for any working person. You made your bed, now sleep in it. Do I have respect? Yes without a doubt.

For the non working.... As a former bill collector, when some elderly person makes $25 a year more than what qualifies to get help with their bills it's a joke. It really is. Yet we have folks trying their best to do the minimum allowed and get everything. If the majority of people knew how things were done back in the day to get welfare it would blow their minds. You had people coming to the home regularly to see who was living there, how many pairs of undi's were there, and the amount of food in the home. Anything over and you were off the program. But to say some little old lady who hasn't a pot to piss in doesn't qualify because of $25 bucks a year (you know 50 cents a week) is a joke. We as a whole owe everything to our elders. If naught for them, we become nothing.

On a side note to the people that say "Our fore fathers would be turning in their grave". Do you really know why they would be turning in their graves?

It would be because if they were alive today they'd be taking up arms against the current regime. There is no way they'd sit back and take what has been given to us currently. We've become(government wise) what they wanted no part of.

End o'rant.

Disagree on the Buffalo teachers. Completely! The average is under 40K., with many in the 30's and 20's. The suburbs are much higher. Buffalo teachers have more challenges with students ie gangs, language barriers with so many refugees and immigrants. They did a whole workup not too long ago in the news. It was shocking.

edit: plus they haven't had a contract for 19 years. How is that acceptable?

Wow dude you're out of your league on this one. My wife is a Buffalo school teacher and DOES NOT make 60+. She doesn't even make 50. She got hired at 32k. She went to college for 6 years and has 18 left on her student loans at $352 a month. She has 30 students in her class room by herself. She works incredibly hard and has levels a stress a bartender like you cant imagine. Do you know what dibbles are? They are reports they have to compile on each student after work. 4.5 hours per student x 30, UNPAID. They randomly demand she do those. That's only one example. She's had students who parents have been murdered mid school year and gets evaluated on that students "growth" that year. To sit back a talk poop about educated hard working people is ignorant. All the same opportunities were there for every person on this message board. Just because you didn't taking advantage of them doesn't make those people bad people. And I'll take a blue light draft, thanks.

He's off on the salary part, though he did not say "all Buffalo school teachers make 60K a year".

However, I think his point, that I agree with to an extent, is that most people choose to have the career they do. They choose where they go to school, and the tuition attached to it, thereby choosing the amount of student loans they pay. They choose what they go to school for. And ultimately, they choose the job they have because if it's really so bad, they can always go do something else. There's no guarantee that the job will be "better", or pay more, but you have the freedom to do something else if it makes you that miserable.

I've been blessed with a decent job, which has allowed me to own my own home for four years now at the age of 29. I have my share of student loan debt, and a car payment, as well as some credit card debt (which I just seem to shift over from zero interest promotion to zero interest promotion every 15-18 months) that I hope to have paid off by next June if I everything goes right. However, all that debt has limited by discretionary income by a lot. I have very little in the way of savings right now. However, that was because of choices I made, and I made alone.

All that being said, just because Buffalo school teachers do choose to be where they are, doesn't mean that the system can't and shouldn't be greatly improved. There is a problem with the American educational system. It's not completely "shot" as was implied in the other thread, but it does need some major repairs. And it's only going to get repaired if we all start giving a damn about it, whether we have kids in the system or not.

I'm not sure where you got these stats. But most teachers do not come close to making 60k a year. And their time off is not paid. They have the option to get their paid spread out through the whole calendar year. Or to have that salary paid during the months they work, and receive nothing during their summer break. Either way, they aren't getting paid not to work during the summer.

Ultimately is is your choice, however the cost for education is absurd. I work for the US DOE. I feel bad for a lot of the people I talk to daily.

Owing 40k to a for profit college when the degree you basically purchased got you a job for 20k per year.... That's not what they signed up for.

Even doctors/lawyers. I have seen bills upwards of 400k, not to mention they tack on 20% as a "collection cost" for falling into default

Before the islanders traded for the two dman, and signed the two former leafs. I thought they had a chance at making the playoffs. While I don't think they are a lock to make the playoffs. I don't see their pick being a top 10 pick in the 2015 draft.

Another sad thing. I just read a few weeks ago that the government will make a 66 billion profit off of college loans that were taken out during 2007-2012. And that profit was after taking out administration fees, and bad debt that wasn't going to be paid.

Kind of sickening.
