The Umberger trade was to get rid of 2 years off the Hartnell deal.
I wish they could of gotten picks/prospects back for Hartnell too, but we will never know what else was available.

Will you be disappointed if Gostisbehere comes up later this year and handles it?

For me if he shows he is ready this would be great.

Hopefully Morin is not going to be rushed though.

I get the Hartnell deal and agree with making it by getting the contract years reduced. However maybe if the big club didn't give Hartnell such an asinine contract the need to unload it wouldn't have been so dire.

I expect Ghost up here at some point. I would just rather he stay down in the AHL. I think this team is ready to be a dumpster fire and would rather not expose the prospects to it.

Always go best player available.
But boy they could really use another playmaker or big scoring winger in the prospect pool, in the worst way.

A lot of this really depends on when Coburn returns -- they have to find a way to collect points, because we're only two games in.

I absolutely understand that at some point, it becomes realistic to look at exactly what you are and think about the future. I get it.

But we're only two games in. They have to try to figure this out, play better, get points. Because I understand "taking a step back to take two steps forward," but I'm sorry, I'm just not wired to go 0-7 or to get strafed every night

They need to split Jake and G up - especially considering most teams are Bergeron'ing that line. In playing them together, the Flyers are wasting both of their top tier offensive talents one shift at a time. If you split them up and reshuffle the lines a little bit it forces opposing coaches to be a little bit more selective in their line matching.

Schenn – Giroux – Simmonds
Read – Lecavalier – Voracek
Raffl – Couturier – Umberger
Rinaldo – Bellemare – Akeson

I think Jsaq was beating that drum all off-season. It could be a good thing to try, maybe win them a few more games in the grand scheme.

Or none?

Sanheim, Hagg, Morin and Ghost have more pressure on their shoulders than I think they know. Its why I want the away from the big club for as long as possible. Until the mess is as cleaned up as can be.

FA will always be there and I do think the Flyers will have to use it to an extent. That's fine, and sometimes you have to. Just really have to hope a few of those kids pull through in a big way. We know first hand what its like having a defense core filled with secondary pieces.

My personal feeling is that 2 or 3 of them will be top 4 guys. If that's the case, we should be well off. In ecstatic that they are in the a and should stay all year for the reasons you mention. I don't want ghost for example called up into this clown show

We hear this talk about letting the prospects develop, blah blah.

Its easy to say that in the off-season. We will see if that's the case when this team struggles this year, or in the next few.

Its going to be interesting. Much like when coaches get burned imo for not cutting the ice-time or benching the stars when they play badly. How long would they last after knowingly hurting the team's chances to win 'right now', just to send a message?

Well yeah - I mean the opposing team Bergeron's Giroux's unit and the only way they make it on the scoreboard is via the PP and some games those can be hard to come by, additionally you're basically leaving the ES success up to VLC and Couturier. Not the soundest of game plans.

Is Giroux capable of transcending top defensive line matching and scoring points at ES? Absolutely, but right now he's not playing at that level.

Oh I know.
Reality is I want this team in the playoffs this year and expect them to be fighting and on the bubble for a spot the entire season.

I do not advocate tanking for the future, I hate that.

But there is no way I would trade a first rounder or Couts or Laughtom or another type A prospect for an aging vet Dman to try and salvage this season if Coburn is gone for a while.

They need to make it with what they've got now. Or not make it.

But do not trade any more of the future help to " win now" I'm done with that approach. It doesn't make sense for this current team.

the guy that gave hartnell the contract is gone and the guy left to clean up the mess is doing what he thinks is right for the team going forward

An honest effort every night, win or lose, is all I'm looking for right now.

Giroux needs to get up to speed after missing most of training camp and Berube needs to figure out who LW1 is gonna be and leave him there so that they can gel.

Getting Coburn back sooner rather than later will be good, but the forwards need to focus on helping out the D more than they have been. The gap control in game 1 was decent, but they started pushing it against the Devils (naturally, down 3-0), and never quite came back to it once they tied it up.

A lot of preseason games and a lack of actual practice didn't help things. I'm still hopeful that they pull it together.

Well said.
I agree with every bit of it.

I think it's important to give BSchenn a long look at wing.
I don't care as much what line he is on as long as they don't keep moving him from C to wing and back.

If the losing continued then Berube will likely continue to line juggle.
It's unfortunate though as no one can get settled into their line mates.

FWIW, I'd move Simmonds to the left side, stack the 1st line and go with:

Simmonds-G-Jake
Bellemare-VLC-Raffl
Umberger-Coots-Read
Raffl-Schenn-Akeson

You can always swap VLC and Schenn on occasion and Bellemare and Schenn now and then as well

I don't understand the Schenn thing at 1LW -- if he could play his way off the line after 4 periods, then you never really believed he was capable of it in the first place.

Either leave him there and live with the learning curve, or move him off the roster for another player who fits better.

But Michael Raffl might never score 40 points or 20 goals in a season. Brayden Schenn has done that. Schenn has value. Put him back and let him learn, or get him off the roster and bring back a piece that fits somewhere on the roster better.
