Are they counting Boston in that? Because the only way they qualify is if you count Dougie Hamilton along with Tyler Seguin, and he wasn't active for that Cup run - AllInForFlyers
Neither of those picks were Boston's picks. They were both Leaf picks. |

Yes and perhaps not, respectively. That's a fair point. I think the better teams in the league do play consistently far more often than the Flyers, but I can't say that with much authority.
Looking at it from that angle also leaves me feeling it's not fair or sufficient to just lay the blame on Claude and the team leaders for this. - BulliesPhan87
Sure, there are going to be segments of 'blah' for every team on a nightly basis. Perhaps I should have said I'd like to see the Flyers play 3 solid periods more consistently?

That refutes the point even more, doesn't it? The Kings nor Bruins didn't win Cups simply because they drafted in the Top 10 -- and before somebody brings up how they cashed in Jack Johnson, remember Johnson was a Carolina third-overall, not theirs |

And wait a minute -- the Kings don't fit that, either -- Drew Doughty is the only top 10 pick of theirs on the roster - AllInForFlyers
Phil Kessel and Zach Hamill were top 10 picks. Kessel was traded for 2nd overall pick Seguin who's scoring helped win the conference finals series against Tampa in 7 games. Brayden Schenn was a top 5 pick that they used to acquire Mike Richards.
I didn't say the picks were on the roster. I said that since the Rangers, Detroit is the only team to win a cup without drafting at least twice in the top 10 six years prior to winning the cup. That's one hell of a coincidence. |

That's pretty flimsy, though -- I understand what you are saying, I understand the point, but I disagree with the outcome -- it really seems to be that trading your top 10 picks is really the way to go
And that still doesn't account for the woeful teams who continually draft high and never get over the hump, or the teams who found other ways to do it -- Minnesota is a lot better because two guys chose to play together and one guy's wife is from there |

What's the Flyers culture now? They play hard one period and sink back the other. They beat the best teams in the league one week and can't beat the devils the next. This has been going on for 3 years. How many times have the said if only we could put together a 60 minute effort? It might not be a culture of losing but its a culture of mediocrity which is way worst.
In 2013 when they won all those meaningless games at the end, all's you heard was that it was important to build a culture of winning and it would carry over the next season. Well they started the next season 0-3 and 1-7 and all those wins did was make them lose out on Seth Jones. Meanwhile the culture of losing in Colorado netted them Mackinnon and a division title the next season.
Talents wins cups. The best talent is at the top of the draft. You have to go back to the 1994 Rangers to find a team besides Detroit to win the cup without multiple top 10 picks in 6 years prior to winning the cup. And the only reason Detroit won without them is because they were way ahead of the curve in scouting Russian and Sweden so unless the Flyers discover a hidden hotbed for hockey in that no one else has, they aren't winning a cup without top picks. - psuhockey

Should've picked Canadian teams for the day instead of Colorado, Anaheim, Buffalo and Boston although I can understand Buffalo proximity-wise. |

You can't account for bad GMs who choose poorly and Minnesota hasn't won anything yet. The multiple picks was just an interesting fact but having an elite talent from the top 10 picks is almost universal for stanley cup winners. Even the rangers don't win without 9th overall Brian Leetch and Detroit's Dynasty doesn't get off the ground without 4th overall Yzerman. Seguin is a bit flimsy but boston hasn't won without him either so there's that. |

D'oh.
The problem was I was thinking of the 2004 draft when the top two picks were also not for sale at any realistic price.
