Nope. It's not tunnel vision. It's a guy making significant money who shouldn't need a partner to carry him. He's a 7 year vet who should be able to provide solid, reliable play no matter who his partner is.
The reason I mention the money is because it's kind of foolish to pay $20 for something you can buy for $5.
It extends past Schenn, too. Streit can be good, but he's limited defensively. Grossmann is a slow guy who has lost a step an struggles to keep up at times. Del Zotto is poor defensively. Schultz was signed to be the 7th guy and he's been solid. MacDonald has played well, but he's not exactly a top pair guy.
If Schenn is going to take a step forward, it'd be great if he did it now. - Jsaquella
Well Voracek is a 7 year vet playing with one of the best playmakers in the league and has yet to crack the 30 goal mark. Could Wayne Simmonds be better this year by having such a strong start? Excuse me if I disagree with everything your saying.
Kimmo Timonen, Brayden Coburn, Matt Carle and Randy Jones. During the 2008-09 season these were our top 4 defenseman. Back then it wasn't good enough. There were plenty of complains of our inability to clear the paint. It would be brought up as an issue in Bill's blog and it was a constant conversation in our posts. So what did we do? Management went out and traded for Andrew Alberts. Alberts didn't stick and I'm sure a lot of this had to do with us trading for Chris Pronger that summer.
If you look at the names prior to the Andrew Alberts deal, I think the problem was that the back end had too much of one thing. Just like right now, we have a very different defense but with the same problem. Too much of one thing. I've seen this episode before.
Now, my issue with picking on Luke Schenn is this. While I don't have an issue with Nick Grosmann, I also understand that his time here is likely coming to a close. Whether he's traded or we simply don't re-sign him in two years, I think we'll move on from him within this window. So for me, I'm okay with allowing one of these current elements of the back end walk, but I'm not okay with both of them going. We still need the strength to clear the crease, the hitting and shot blocking on the back end. It's just that, I myself would choose the much younger of the two players, who also happens to be much better with the puck then the older guy. Keep in mind that we're also thin on penalty killing defenseman at the moment, so who replaces Schenn if we simply just give away his 3.6mm cap hit? I'm not expecting whatever we get in return to be that much better then Luke.
Now, I also think it would be ignorant to suggest that Luke Schenn is not getting any better. We could have said this a year ago but then we traded for Andrew MacDonald and he did get better. In fact, for those who have short memories, I thought Luke Schenn was one of our better defenseman in the playoffs this past spring. I think it's unfair to compare "A crippled Nick Grossmann" to how Luke Schenn is playing because Grossmann isn't crippled and Luke Schenn is playing with a D partner who is clearly showing why he's had trouble holding down a job. I'm telling you guys right now, New York Rangers fans are laughing at us.
I get that the grass could be greener on the other side because a rumour has broken out that the Flyers have called Buffalo about Tyler Myers but Myers also comes with his own set of issues. He could be a taller, more expensive Luke Schenn. |

They lost by 1 goal with him to a vastly superior team. That's enough of an example for you that he's no good to the team?
You are a (frank)ing tool. - jmatchett383
ok tough guy we lost by 1 goal because coburn went full retard and left a bruin wide open in front of the next could have at least gotten 1 point if it weren't for him |

Exactly. I mean, this Flyers' team is possible the worst team ever constructed. That shouldn't even count seeing it's basically a walkover. |

ah i remember we used to go back and forth about coburn. now we will at least have a somewhat decent sample size to work with. if this team's defense rallies and becomes better off without him, i will tip my hat to you and never again extol his value as a pretty decent, albeit miscast, player. |

So it is 100% Coburn's fault that the Bruins won that game? That's what you're telling me? |

Agreed. That terrible Coburn-led defense let up a whopping 2 goals to the class of the Eastern Conference. The defense has been much steadier in the games without him so far. |

i would say that coburn probably had more of a hand in the fact that it was tied that late in regulation than he did in directly contributing to a bruins victory. |

I blame Gerry Melnyk.
After all, he's the guy who drafted Bobby Clarke, who eventually became our GM, who resigned, opening the spot for Paul Holmgren, who put this abomination together, and who hired Craig Berube to run it... |

I blame Ed Snider for founding the franchise. Otherwise, we wouldn't have this mess.
Actually, it's really Adam and Eve's fault. Had they not procreated, none of these terrible players/coaches would have existed to put this team in such a horrible state. |

Guess that Mark Howe was a total bum then.
Also, not sure what a game last week has to do with winning the Cup. |
