If they added Myers, next year they'd have Myers at $5.5m, Streit at $5.25m, AMac at $5m, Coburn at $4.5m, Schenn at $3.6m and Grossmann at $3.5m. That's $27.35 million tied up in a so-so blueline. Coburn, Grossmann and Schenn will all be UFAs after next season. I expect Coburn will get a raise and one of Grossmann and Schenn will be gone. I'd rather move away from vets with big contracts. Myers is signed through 2018-19 and AMac is signed through 2019-20. - NickTheKid87
I think Coburn could be gone at the TDL depending on this teams record and standing. He would be able to bring some asset or assets in return. They could move Schenn as well and Vinny depending on how he looks until then. So I don't think the 5.5 is a problem. |

An up and down guy to an up and down team... he'll fit right in. - Tomahawk
Yep. If they move Schenns for him, it's an upgrade on Luke in terms of ability and perhaps upside, but right now they're both inconsistent players who struggle with hockey sense and regularly making the smart play. |

That would still tie up a lot of money on a average blueline. You have to expect Ghost, Morin and/or Hagg will be ready to step in next year too. - NickTheKid87
seriously its 1.5 more than if you keep lschenn or grossman...thats a nice upgrade for 1.5 more over those two. |

See, I'm not sure that's how I'd interpret it.
I thought MTL play relatively poopty for 2-periods, just like they did in their previous game against the Caps, but after they hit the switch, they just steamrolled a weaker opponent.
I think most of us had doubts about the viability of this team, considering the most optimistic anybody here dared to be was "playoff bubble team, 1st-round fodder".
It's year 2 of the 5-year plan, though. If they're still like this in a season or two, then start worrying. - Tomahawk
What bothered me about the 3rd against Montreal wasn't that they got outplayed by a better team, but that they got significantly outworked by a team that was also playing their 3rd game in 4 nights and all of them on the road.
Lack of talent is no excuse for just standing around or running around the zone like a decapitated chicken. Yes, Montreal may have had the better roster that night, but in the 3rd period the Flyers weren't even playing basic Hockey 101. |

My answers:
1. I think Giroux is a capable leader. Look at what he did last year, and in previous seasons. There have been hiccups, but there's also a team that has been resilient and dug itself out of many holes(certainly some self inflicted). Remember, last season, when they were 30th in the NHL, Giroux is the one that said, "We're making the playoffs" and then carried the team there.
2. I wouldn't trade Giroux unless the return was astronomical. And it wouldn't be for a Shea Webber type vet. If I'm trading Giroux it's for stellar young talent and high picks. Trading Giroux is a rebuild, not a retool.
3. Very possibly. Hartnell was a popular guy. He was close friends with Giroux and most of the core guys and seems like a guy who could help keep things loose in the room and provide guidance to youngsters.
4. One of my biggest knocks on Berube is the different standards he holds guys to in terms of accountability. Unless it's a guy like Giroux or Voracek or Simmonds, a guy sheer irreplaceable ability and skill, there should be no free rides. If a vet like Grossmann or Umberger (just examples not finger pointing) struggle they should be benched/limited as quickly as a younger guy, like Schenn or Raffl.
A bit more yelling or whatever might be effective for a short bit, but the benefits of that generally have a short shelf life. - Jsaquella[/quote]
Agree totally with the first bolded section!
As far as yelling goes, I don't care if he yells or not, I just want accountability. I want to see a guy who isn't moving his feet or takes a bonehead penalty on the bench for an extended period of time. |

Wow, so if I even consider trading Giroux, not advocate it, but consider it, I'm irrational. That's pretty insulting.
IMO, no one is untouchable. It all depends on the deal. Do I think they should trade Giroux, no, most likely not. That doesn't mean, however, I'm not going to listen if another team calls. - BiggE
I too would listen. Not shop him but listen. For example, if FLD wants to throw a deal with Barkov and Kulikov/or/Gudbranson then yes I'm listening. It would need to be youth and probably a 2 for one. I agree it is a re-build at that point. Throw the season and get a very high draft pick to boot. It could only happen around December IMHO and only if they are dead in the water (which sadly could happen). |

Giroux has an NMC. These trade scenarios are pointless.
Gordon in for VLC. Manning in for Grossmann.... - PLindbergh31
Jones is the 13th forward. Grossmann should play unless the virus is actually ebola. |

Now if Arizona had that pick and wanted to include OEL as well, then I'd probably say yes.

But he's signed through 2018-19 which is what worries me. If it was $3m per in that span, it would be a lot easier to swallow. |

I think there are some serious questions to be asked regarding leadership of this team, particularly regarding consistency and the team game. I don't think it should follow that we may need to move on from Giroux. I have a hard time seeing us winning a trade where we send a 26 year old top scoring player the other way.
Winning cures everything, and the season is young. - BulliesPhan87
Down with _laude!
In all seriousness, I agree, trading a top 10 NHL players is ludicrous unless you're fully committing to a rebuild and can get some really good prospects/picks in return. |

So G for McDavid straight up?
Simple- Yes.
McDavid is projected to be a generational talent ala Crosby. And would be hitting his prime the same time as our D prospects. Simple answer. |
