To tip, or not to tip, that is the question

I can't believe that it's legal to pay someone below minimum wage because they get tips. It's called minimum wage for a reason. You can't do that poop up here in Canada. (Granted, here in Sask you get $16/hr to work at Tim Hortons.)

There was a study done, and I remember the cost of increasing server wage was very minimal. That's taking into consideration that you no longer need to tip

The average tip last night was about $10 a check.

On just those numbers the check would go up about $15 a $5 increase or 50% more than what would've been tipped.

It's good for the owner but bad for the employee. Thus making it become a job you don't want to do. As people are rude and ignorant when going out. I can tell you right now I would be looking for different employment if that were to happen as I couldn't pay my bills on $10-$15 an hr + the wear and tear on my body wouldn't be worth it. I walked 11 miles at work last night and it was slow.

Consistent play is all that's needed.

He's talking about also the added expense of health benefits. Not just the wages. I think on wages alone it isnt going to be huge. But health care is very expensive.

It's probably more accurate to say there are two different minimum wages. One for tipped workers that is lower and one that is for everyone else, which is higher.

If a tipped worker doesn't make the standard minimum wage with his hourly wages and tips then the employer is obligated to make up the difference. So, in theory, the tipped worker should never actually take home less than the standard minimum wage. I suspect it doesn't always work that way in reality, though.

I remember when my one cousin (who's a cop) thought it was asinine that a server could make 200-300 in one night. What people don't understand is that it's only possible for most server/bartenders to do that 2 maybe 3 days a week. It's not a normal job whatsoever

Providing health care might not be required to move away from the tipping model. It was obviously part of that NPR story I linked, but I doubt that's the only model out there. Of course, I'm not sure what the PPACA implications would be for those employers.

I'm not going to get into what I avg a night but lets put it this way. I make in 30-35 hrs a week what I was making working 75-85 hrs a week(working 2 jobs) at 18-30 yrs old.


It is not a job everyone can do as dealing with drunks 7-11 hrs at a time isn't the easiest.

I go to my sisters bar in atlanta 1 weekend a month'

pour drinks 13 hours on saturday and 5 hours on friday and sunday

I make $1100 for that weekend
