Umberger looks like Ryan Howard
- vejim

Umberger is a walking, talking buy out waiting to happen, from whom, nothing much but defensive consistency was expected.

Umberger looks like an embalmed corpse skating around out there.

He's shot.

- PLindbergh31

yah. I see the idea behind the trade to get cap space down the line faster, but Umberger is just horrible. Id sit him and insert a rookie at this point that has a pulse.

I can agree with that. But effort isn't something you need to adjust to. Sometimes he just doesn't bring it. And I feel it is more times then not. I am not nieve and know it is still early. But I can't keep watching the lack of effort. For as much we pick on Rinaldo you never watch a game and question the effort.
- J35Bacher

I disagree with this. You don' see effort from Schenn because he is expending it somewhere else because he is not comfortable with his position yet. He's doing a lot of skating, just not in the right place. If you give him 20 games with the same line, and position and he still looks like this then yes, I will be more concerned.

You use Rinaldo as an example of effort. Many nights, he is doing the ame thing. He routinely puts himself out of defensive position to deliver a big hit. But because their is visual evidence of "effort" he is okay.

How exactly should a Coach figure out the shootout? It's simply a skills breakaway competition. Send out the best guys, and hope they score. And hope the goalie makes the save. The most the coaching staff can do is give scouting reports on shooters or goaltenders. Not much to figure out.
- MJL

i disagree, the shooter has an advantage coming in alone on a defenseless goalie, how come we have the worst shootout in the league for years now?

is it because our players suck or is it because the coach dont care and takes it for a joke?

did chip kelly take his special teams seriously? and practice certain things? or did he say its just a kickoff/punt maybe we will get lucky?

Simmer could be the LeClair to G's Lindros, though. Not sniping goals, but still goals in abundance.
- Tomahawk

Oh, don't get me wrong..I agree with that. I'd like someone on the other side that has a deadly shot. Give G the chance to go either direction with the pass, and Simmonds can either fire off a shot or collect the greasy rebounds.

Although I really like Read with Couts, I'd love someone like him on the 2nd line with Schenn and Jake. They have some guys with speed, but are they finishers? Maybe Akeson would be the guy for now.

As much as I hate the shootout, it is what it is. They must get better at it. They have the players with the skill to do so they just don't seem to have "it" in the shootout. These are points that this team can't afford to lose, and they should consider bringing in a shootout specialist when the opportunity arises. Plug him into the lineup somewhere, can't be worse than some of our current anchors.

Umberger is a huge turd.

As time goes on, I grow to dislike Berube more and more. He seems scared to coach and make adjustments. His refusal to break up certain pairs of forwards is beyond frustrating. I personally think Voracek is ready to take that next step and become an elite winger. He may also benefit by having his own line. No reason a top six of:

Read - Giroux - Simmonds
Schenn - Cooter - Voracek

shouldn't be tried. I also feel like Akeson's skillset is going to waste away on the 4th line. He should also be one the 2nd PP unit. I was furious to see Umberger on it.

Would love to see Simmer w/ G and Jake w/ Schenn.
- Tomahawk

Last year I would have blasted this and said no way can Simmer play on the first line with G, he is not a first line wing.
Great PP net guy but 5 v 5 he is a 3rd liner.

This year I agree. Simmer I think could keep up with G.
It's fun seeing his game and confidence level improve like this.

Mase was my favorite positive thing about the team last year.

It's still very early but the growth of Wayne into this type of player may be the best thing this year. If he keeps it up.

If they played B Schenn consistently with Voracek it would be the end of the trade Brayden talk.

His shot is good, but he can't make his own shot.
- johndewar

This is actually the crux... and what makes him a lousy LW. He's not backing anybody in w/ speed like Pacioretty, or beating guys w/ 1v1 moves like Perron. His shot becomes useless.

He needs linemates who can open up a bit of shooting room for him and find him back-door on the far post... his wrister is good enough to get him 30-goals per year... he can rip it, bar down, as good as anybody on the team.

I think a lot of the shootouts are just chance.

How come good players like Ovechkin, Malkin etc, have a shootout success rate of only 23 to 25% ?

Wouldn't that mean that a goalie stops them 3 times our of 4?

They wont say it but the moves this summer and the way these games are being played and the lineup used seems to smell tank nation

I'd put Umby back with VLC and Raffl and play that line 3rd line minutes and hope to break even against the competition.

Until there are other options.
VLC if here has to play C.

Practicing against the same 2-3 goalies isn't going to really make them any better, either. So they've got the book on Emery, Mase... great. Not really going to help unless they change the rule to where you shoot against your own.

They probably still wouldn't score in an actual game
