I like the old definition. Crosby is the only active "generational" talent in the game today, IMO.
- NickTheKid87

This is an accurate assessment, imo

I think it means a player who is head and shoulders above all other players in his general age range, and is a sure fire dominating player in the NHL.

That we had two in the league at once in Gretz and Lemieux was amazing.

Now we have 1 for sure in Crosby.

- MBFlyerfan

I think there can be more than 1.

50 - Richard/Howe
60s/70s - Orr, Esposito
80s/90s - Gretzky/Lemieux
00s-10s - Crosby

There doesn't have to be a generational talent in the league either. So after Crosby retires, maybe there is none. Who knows? McDavid could be one. MacKinnon too. Or both could just be really really good. This is all by my definition at least.

Neither of which were generational talents.

This is pretty much what I'm thinking. You could make a case for Lindros. At the peak of his career, he may have been in a league only with Lemieux and Gretzky but we all know the story of his career.

If you make a case for Eric Lindros, why stop there?

What about Pavel Bure? He was potting 50 goals regularly in the same generation. Or Sergei Fedorov? There wasn't anything he couldn't do, really.

Talking about what is a "generational" talent reminds me of arguing who an "elite" QB is in football. You can't always say, but you know it when you see one.

Lindros was definitely a generational player regardless how his career ended, most players dont end their careers winning hart trophies

Lindros was much more multi faceted than federov or bure

Unless you're Bobby Orr.

Lidstrom is a close one, and so is Jagr. But to me, if I had to pick 2 for the 90s, it's probably Lidstrom and Hasek., with Hasek being the more dominant.

Agreed or Bure, disagree on Fedorov. Fedorov would have been winning scoring titles throughout the 90s if he wasn't playing defensive hockey or, when needed, defense.

I'll give you Bure, but I'm gonna disagree with you completely on Federov.

That dude won Selke trophies and was a better than a PPG player. He could play any role on the ice asked of him....scorer, shutdown forward, you name it.

Yup which is why it's just a semantics argument. If we're going by Hart Trophies, Gretzky is definite. Mario Lemieux wins more than 3 if not for Gretzky and cancer. Crosby probably has 4 or 5 right now without his injuries. Orr has 3 which is second most among defensemen, only behind Eddie Shore's four in the 30s. Gordie Howe won 6. Lindros may have won 5 if not for Lemieux, Gretzky and concussions.
