A generational talent is a player who will CLEARLY be the best player in the game the moment he steps on the ice. Or in the case of Lemiuex and Gretzky, players.
This is why players such as Lidstrom, Bure, Fedorov, Toewes etc don't fit the criteria.
Crosby, however, was the best player in the game from his first shift in the league. Same goes for 99 and 66.
You might be able to argue that Lindros had generational talent when he joined the league, and for a while there he was the best in the league. His combination of size and skill had never been seen in the league before him. But I think the injuries prevented him from truly reaching that strata.
It is also why I don't include Tavares, Stamkos, McDavid or any of the other great young players in the league.

anyone else see this last night, lindrosesk - mydoglicks
I felt Benn was overrated (didn't actually see him play many games though) until the Olympics last year, where he was excellent. Then I saw the playoffs and holy cow, he's a good player. |

So several leaf fans have become flyer fans in recent years? - JoeRussomanno
It's an obvious optimistic view from fans of every team.
From the sample size I've seen, Toronto has notoriously been the worst. But I don't have the analytics to back it up. |

Every Toronto Maple Leaf ever has been overrated by that fanbase. - bradleyc4
Incorrect.
Every good Toronto Maple Leaf has been under-rated.
And every crap Toronto Maple Leaf has been vastly over-rated. |

Yeah, and not just better, too -- head and shoulders better. Crosby's the only guy currently in the league that can boast that mantle.
Giroux's in that Recchi, Kariya, group of undeniable superstars -- who are just one step behind the Forsbergs, Selannes, Yzermans, Lidstroms that could transcend the game more than occasionally, but not completely. |

You could make a case that Trevor Gillies has transcended the game of hockey. |

Know who's always been overrated?
Wendel Clark. - Pecafan Fan
Oh Lord, I've been sucked in.
To fully understand Clark's aura, you have to remember the era.
The Leafs were effing awful. Not like today awful. Much, much worse. It was the Ballard era.
Hope had died.
And then Wendel came, and he actually gave a crap. Nobody else on the team gave a crap, but Wendel was out there, hitting and fighting and trying his best to try to restore some respect to the franchise.
He wasn't a Hall of Fame player (not even close), but his impact on the trajectory of the Leafs shouldn't be underestimated.
Ballard died in 91, and a couple of years later, the Leafs were one high-sticking call away from going to the finals.
Where we would have beaten the Habs (I put that in just for you, Pecafan Fan). |

Im sorry but i have to argue that lindros was especially in the parameters set by u guys, like as soon as they joined the league... Are u kidding me iirc lindros had 40 goals as a rookie. And as a rookie he was already a match for guys like scott stevens... Even 66 and 99 needed premeire talent around them to hoist cups, the only thing lindros didnt do... Furthermore he made players around him better. |

Trevor Gillies should not earn money playing professional ice hockey at any level. |

When he was in his prime, he was (by far) the most exciting player to watch.
It's an effing crime that he isn't in the HHOF right now. |

yeah. i think you can possibly argue whether or not he is a hall of famer simply due to the lack of duration, but i have a hard time understanding how he was not a generational talent in his prime stretch. |
