Man, if we could get Eberle out of them...
Swap Simmonds to LW and put him with Jake and G. Then Put Eberle with Coots and Read.
That is a nice one two punch. - hereticpride
Why not try to get Perron? Likely will cost less to acquire, cheaper, very creative and speedy left winger. Also damned good in shootouts |

The only reason I say they should have picked Jones is that they already had three good centers when they picked MacKinnon. - aflyerpower8
that's like saying pick jones over crosby |

If I already had Duchene, Stastny, and O'Reilly, then yes. |

In that spot, you just take best player available. MacKinnon was probably the safest pick too. |

No they don't - Just5
Yes they do. Couturier outscored players like Kesler and Plekanec at ES last year. He's shown more than enough offense to be a 2C. He just hasn't done anything to suggest he should be replacing Voracek on the top PP unit. |

What would you give up for Perron? I have a hard time figuring out his value.
He also only has one more year left on his deal... |

I would have gone MacKinnon, too. He's got all the skills to be a dominant center. |

Yeah, but is he going to get a raise to the $6mm that Eberle makes now?
I like Eberle, but I think Perron is more realistic/cheaper. |

True, but that doesn't account for what Seth Jones brings to the table. |

Defenseman are just more unpredictable. When you have an opportunity to take an elite talent like MacKinnon, you take it. |

Agreed. You can just as easily ask why Tampa didn't take Jones either. |

I guess, but most scouts felt Jones was a close to a sure thing as you could get. |

I'd think long and hard about it. I'd prefer upgrading the D with Schenn. Maybe if they expanded it to add Petry...I'd have to look at capgeek and some stats to figure out a good suggestion, but there's common ground. Perron is young enough at 26 where it's not a deal that robs youth for an old guy, though.
I will say this, Edmonton's team defense might be worse than the Flyers. I started watching the Oiler/Canucks game after the Phantoms and was kind of half paying attention and I saw at least 4 or 5 plays in the space of 5 minutes where the Oilers made really egregiously stupid coverage mistakes.
They have no discipline in their game. puck went behind net. One Oiler, two Canucks. The other defenseman went to the right post. The center who came back for support went to the same damned post. Scrivens had to make a good side to side stop to keep it scoreless. |

Florida surprised me with Barkov. He's a great prospect, and I know they have some good defense prospects. But I was sure they were going Jones or Drouin. |

I know, but go back and look at defenseman taken in the top 10 or the top 5. The bust rate is much higher. |

Yeah. I think you can question Fla or TB. Having Jones and Hedman moving forward would look pretty good |

Alright you got me
You know who had 35 and 32 even strength points for 08-09 and 09-10 (the chart I'm looking at has Coots at 28 Even points last year)?
Jordan Staal.
Would you have taken Jordan Staal as your 2nd line center of the future for your team back then to build a perennial contender? |
