That 5-1 beating last season was as thorough an ass-kicking the Flyers have taken that I could remember - AllInForFlyers
the first 35 minutes weren't bad and then it just fell apart. the habs game the other night kind of recalled that 'collapse level' for me |

That sentence makes me sad - AllInForFlyers
it makes me smile a little because the one constant is knowing, no matter what, the pens come unhinged when they play the flyers. i would book that game as win #1 if they don't get one before then |

They really haven't tho since Berybe has taken over. Those games were free for all's under Lavi. With Berube not so much. |

maybe not to the same extent but the flyboys seem to bring out something in them that makes them try to play w/ more of an edge |

VandeVelde in, hmm I guess the theme is to plug in utility role players and just stay the course of Berube's 'system'. |

They got rid of some of their stupid, though, by trading Neal and letting Orpik and Engelland walk
Letting those three mental midgets go is straight-up addition by subtraction, though from what I read, Hornqvist looks like he's getting the job done, too |

Ha! Realize the sample size was likely fairly small, but I was always surprised at just how bad they looked with Read on the eye-test; glad to see I'm not going blind -- Giroux/Voracek did look awful with him |

The more I look at this team and roster, the more depressed I am getting.
Our first line features a left winger who has no business whatsoever playing on a top line.
Our 2nd line features a center who as all of 5 games of NHL experience and who just 2 weeks ago was a 4th liner. It also features a converted center at left wing who has yet to prove that he can be a top 6 winger.
Our 3rd line has what looks to be a skating zombie on the left wing. But hell, he's big and doesn't suck defensively so heck keep running him out there.
And last but not least our 4th line, which actually had some promise just a week or so ago, now features 2 career minor leaguers and a guy who skates fast and hopefully won't take a dumb penalty.
Sadly, however, the D looks even worse. 2 guys you can't use on the PK, a pairing that's a defensive nightmare and a journeyman teaming with a generic 2nd pair guy on our top pairing. Oh joy!
Forget me drinking, I'm wondering if I should pour Mason a strong one, he's gonna need it!!

So I back-read yesterday's chat thread. I actually think a trade with Edmonton makes sense, albeit if MacTavish gets a bit more realistic. They clearly need a gritty center, and we need more skill at forward. I'm ok trading either Schenn or Laughton in the right deal.
Here is a major trade that wouldn't happen, but I'd take a chance with:
Flyers: Perron, Klefbom, Draisaitl
Edmonton: B Schenn, Coburn, Laughton
Edmonton gets gritty down the middle and much-needed defense. It's also immediate help.
Flyers are taking a risk as Klefbom hasn't blossomed yet and Draisaitl is a talent, but unknown. But we'd get skilled for 1st line with Perron, a more skilled prospect for 2nd line center and a potential top-pairing guy with Klefbom. We'd also get cap relief. But...
in the short term, we'd have even bigger defensive problems. A deal that would make more sense in December than today. - TheGreat28
If mctavish pulls the trigger on this he should be fired immediately. This isn't close o fair value IMO

Well, they still have Downie to hoist the flag of stupidity!
But yeah, all kidding aside, they should be more disciplined this year. Though they may miss Neal's offense at some point. |

Sorry
I really wish I felt better about this team but I just don't. Now I am cool with Hextall building through the draft and I'm fine with missing the playoffs this year. However, I just don't see the point of sitting Akeson for VDV or not giving a guy like Laughton a shot when Vinnie is injured.
I took a good, long look at the schedule through the end of November. Even trying to be somewhat optimistic, I can't see them being any better than maybe 7-10-5 and even that may be pushing it.
Sigh

The worst part is that even if you come to a different conclusion, the statements themselves are, at best, damning with faint praise or, at worst, simply horrific |

It was touched on earlier, but if you think you can run a stifling team defensive system with Vandevelde/Jones instead of Lecavalier/Akeson, then now is the time to go for it.
I didn't think Vandevelde was much more than a below-replacement level player, but if he can, say, win faceoffs and clear pucks and meet all of his defensive assignments, then I can see it.
I mean, let's be honest. Right now, the Flyers are hard-pressed to keep teams from getting more than three goals a night. It's hard to win like that. They've gotta find a way to make three goals against the maximum, with Coburn or without |

All they need to do up front is get a skilled RW that can offensively carry the 2nd line. If they do that then they can move Simmonds up to the 1st line LW spot and you've got yourself a real nice one-two punch. BSchenn+ should be able to get you that type of player.
The D is what it is this year. Ghost will be here next year. Maybe Hagg and Morin too. At least they have those guys in line... |

I just see it as a 4th line that can contribute absolutely no offense. If they wanted a guy to just win faceoffs and check, they may as well have just re-signed Hall |

I hear you, man. Believe me, I hear you. If it was me, Rinaldo-PEB-Akeson would still be a thing and Schenn would be centering that second line, but WTF do I know |
