Why do people do this? It's not clever, funny or amusing. You just out yourself as a dullard. I don't know you, but I have to believe you're better than that. |

You mean the Oilers hired a fancy stats blogger and they aren't doing well? Is that possible? |

Did one of these smart persons hurt your feelings or are you just mad because statistics have shown the grit and personality specialists you have a hard on for are useless?
I just had to ask since you seem to love to throw snark at Gunners views or anyone who, God forbid, might agree. |

Shown?? What have they shown? Adams and Sill are in the lineup over wimps like Megna and Dea. We cut Carcillo, one of the two teams in the league on the cusp of a dynasty pick him up. The Oilers hire a ''Hockey analytics genius" and they are 0-4. I don't think anything has been proven and honestly I believe they have a place, but the fanaticism over them is a passing fad. The role of a good forth line grinder however always has a place in hockey. I think Ryan Wilson is a good blogger and has a passion for the pens and I read his blog everyday. I aim Fancy stat snarks at all of you. |

That's really just uncalled for. Folks are allowed to like advanced stats, and they're allowed to dislike advanced stats.
Sure, it was snark, and it's way too early to judge whether in-house metrics guys end up being a worthwhile investment. But there's a lot of pressure on the advanced stats community right now to prove their worth.
Personally, I think advanced stats tend to show which players are good at compiling advanced stats. Kind of like the testing craze in education, where it's less about learning and more about getting proficient at displaying prowess on standardized tests large and small.
The big challenge for the stats community is to show that they're predictive. Not just try to explain the past through their use. |

I can assure you three things. First, the fanaticism is all in your head. Two, advanced stats are not going anywhere. And third, one man brought into a team to bring an insight into the statistics of the players on an individual and team level was going to have little if any effect on the team, nor do they have a say in coaches or players so you come off as both uninformed and not funny to anyone except maybe yourself. |

just equally snarky retorts to someone who consistently needs to piss and moan In most blogs about stats that are over his head.

its not about "being in over your head." Advanced stats, depending on how and when they are used just cheapen the game. the best, albeit nerdy, example I can come up with is kinda like the matrix movie. at the end when keeanu sees the world as a bunch of numbers and letters. I'd rather take the red pill (blue pill?) and enjoy the game. If I ever watch Sid or Geno or MAF or (name NHL player here) and see corsi or fenwick or o zone starts, please kill me. another example is going to the museam to look at a beautiful piece of artwork and having some snob break it down to brushstrokes and technique and ultimately ruining a great thing. |

I know... Especially when the fancy stats blogger clearly has the authority to make trades and roster moves. |

Did anyone else watch In the Room? There's a great segment of Sutter mic'd up and talking to Kuni about the D depth. Neither one of them mentions Scuds as an option...

Brad Marsh made a good point about Advanced Stats
A defenceman can play perfect position, force a shooter into taking a bad angled low percentage shot on net and according to Advanced Stats its a negative Corsi event for that D-man |

Or a line gives up a weak perimeter shot and then goes to the other end and holds the puck deep for a full minute without registering a shot and their "possession" number will go down. |
