Maybe those other players had higher demands. There's two sides to every story. While the Moulson contract isn't that great, who's to say that other people weren't asking for more which is why Murray decided to go with Moulson instead.

It's a possibility, but highly unlikely. I find it really hard to believe that there wasn't one other free agent willing to sign for a shorter term, especially when you consider the fact that there are some UFA's that are still currently unemployed. The logic just doesn't hold up.
