So you don't believe that a veteran player who is a period of poor play, can turn that around and play better? - MJL
There is a difference. I believe a guy like Lecavalier can have a better year because he struggled for one season but I do not believe he is going to improve to the point where he's a top line player. There are exemptions of course but a bad hockey player does not get improve drastically in his 30s

We think they SHOULD be correctable, but sometimes, players are what they are. If you make the same "mistake" repeatedly, it is more likely that either you simply don't understand how to do it properly, don't have the physical ability to do it properly, or don't recognize what is happening so you can do it properly - AllInForFlyers
That's the issue for the Flyers. It's not mistakes, everybody makes them. Zdeno Chara, Shea Weber, Bobby Orr, Mark Howe...they have all blown a coverage or two. The issue for the Flyers is, that it's rarely a coverage or two.
It's the same guys, making the same type of mistakes repeatedly. In the case of a guy like Luke Schenn, it may well just be a case of poor hockey smarts or feel for the game. In the case of a guy like Grossmann, it might be that he's physically lost a step or two and hasn't learned how to adjust the mental aspect of his game to match his current physical abilities.
Regardless, at some point in time, something that should be correctable becomes something that is simply outside a particular player's ability to fix and you factor in if that weakness is detrimental enough to justify replacing the player. |

I agree. Schenn has not been good and I would not be at all surprised if Shultz stayed in the lineup over him when Coburn returns. As for Coburn it is the same thing as you said. He is good on the coverage but he's weak on the puck and constantly turns the puck over. I feel as if he's #2 on the team because there is no better option not because he deserves it.

Actually, comparatively speaking, Coburn doesn't turn the puck over that often. He was tied with Grossmann for turnovers last season and given the disparity in ice time, usage and amount of time handling the puck, his turnover numbers were acceptable.
He's not a legit number one, nor is he a cure all for the defense. But he is their best defensive player, and he's a very capable player. I wouldn't trade him unless the return was fairly significant, because he's a guy they will almost certainly need to replace the second he walks out the door. |

I think any trade talk right now is just bluster. There's no reason for the Flyers or many other teams to be doing anything. We are 5 games in. The Flyers need to give B Schenn on the wing until at least right up to the deadline if not the entire year. The only player I could see them trading at the drop of a hat would be Vinny if he happens to get hot. |
