And I would be ok with that as well.
I just don't want to them to sit on their hands if there are deals to make. I always get visions of the Phillies who tried to keep being competitive when they could have made deals so the future wasn't so bleak. I thought the Phillies should have moved Utley and Rollins earlier when they had value and could get players to help in moving forward - J35Bacher
I don't want them to just make deals because a deal is there to be made. I think that has happened in the past, where they felt a need to "Do Something" and ended up making a questionable deal-like Kubina |

I don't think there are many trades early in the season. I just don't recall it happening too often. I think 5 games in Hextall is still in the evaluation phase. Plenty of time for deals later in the season and at the deadline when the Flyers have a better idea of what this team is.
Obviously defense is the major need. Legit first pairing guys don't become available too often, and that is what the Flyers desperately need. I think the best plan is to hope one of the prospects develops into that kind of player. The worst thing the Flyers can do is give up valuable assets for another marginal player who isn't a true difference maker. |

I actually think LW is the major need. At least with the D you know you have 4 strong prospects in the system. |

They need to give BSchenn a long term shot at 1LW before trading for one. He has his legs now, so I'd like to see him move up when Vinny comes back. Put Raffl with Vinny and Simmonds. #Keep10and40apart
Yeah, 2nd and a 3rd when he was 27 making $1.6M... age 30 w/ ~$7M left on his deal and a poor bill of health probably means a late-round draft pick at best. - Tomahawk
Why Holmgren had to give him 4 years instead of 3 I will never understand. |

They do, but defenseman are so much harder to project that forwards. And like he said, a true top-pair defender is the #1 demand in the NHL. If they really need to, they could trade for a top-6 (or even top-line) winger. A #1 defender is not something that many teams would give up for less than a king's ransom. |

LW is thin for sure. But those players are available in trades, and FA much more readily than stud d-men are. I always equate defensemen in the NHL to starting pitching in baseball. Can never have too much quality. |

Agreed. Homer should have known his knees were gonna give out on him. And we all know that no player ever plays well past 30. Worst GM ever. |

I agree. I don't want to make a deal just to deal. I think if they want a legit top end defensman I look to WPG. They seem to have soured on Bogossian. I know his history. But he also has the upside to be that number one guy with size and skill. He would be one guy that you could get and still be here as prospects come up. If I am moving Schenn he would be a guy I target. |

His knees were already bad when we got him. And his concrete hands have always being his biggest weakness. |

Adding L. Schenn on the cheap, the coup for Kubina, the cap friendly deal for AMac, Holmgren is the Frank Lloyd Wright of bluelines. |

If it was a straight B Schenn for Bogo deal, I'd be hesitant even then. Bogo still has the "potential" label, yet he's now in his 7th NHL season (6th full). I'm not sure I want to trade a young forward for a defenseman full of "potential" who "could use a change of scenery." Didn't we do that a few years ago for a guy from the same draft? |

Bogo would be a possible target in that case. He's the kind of guy I think could benefit from a change of scenery. He's got a big cap commitment. But I'd consider him. |

FWIW:
•The Fourth Period: The Flyers are looking to improve their roster and have made available Luke Schenn, Braydon Coburn and Nicklas Grossman. Sources saying the Flyers may also be making Brayden Schenn available. Flyers GM Ron Hextal is thought to be shopping Brayden and would like to bring in a top-six forward to play with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek. The Flyers would also like to strengthen their blueline.
•David Pagnota: Brayden Schenn’s name is out there, but it doesn’t look like anything is imminent.

We'd be over the cap. It would have to be both Schenns. |

How about we target MDZ? Same draft class, lots of potential. probably just needs a change of scenery or 3. |

I'm just talking about the quality of the trade. But yes, it would not work in cap land. |

Yeah, that's the difference between Bogo and L Schenn.... Bogo has that expansive upside and has every tool in the box you could want but health... Schenn's upside was based on a role/style that was/is being phased out of the league. |

Why is the current defense core in the state it's in now? Not interested in hearing about career ending injuries to players who were in their upper 30's. |

But Bogosian and Luke Schenn are two totally different players.
Yet he is still only 24 years old and his cap hit is only 5.142mil. Look at what defenders are getting now. Brodin, Brodie, Gardnier are all getting 4-4.5 million. If I can get my future number one at his cap hit, I think it is a steal because we know the cap will start going up next year. |

All possible, but I'm sure Hexy knows that he'd be selling from a position of weakness now. I'd wait until the quarter mark to see where we stand. With Coburn being out, we're not exactly sure what we have here. Only way I'd trade Coburn is if you are clearly out of it and someone overpays> I can't see someone putting a 1 or 2 dman on the block as part of a big trade, but I guess it could happen if another team is desperate. A lot of talk about the Oilers, but really what do they have that we need? They need D like we do..If I could get Eberle at the right price.. fine but that's really not where Hexy needs to focus. |
