hmm. Coates is literally painful.
Jackson I actually enjoy as an announcer, except for his ridiculous homerism.
Steigy and Errey, they also suffer from blatant homerism, and also from the fact that they just arent very good.
So, tough call. - stayinthefnnet

Voynov is scheduled to appear in Torrance, CA court on Dec 1. Case will first be reviewed by district atty's office for felony consideration
Peace out Slava. If the Kings knew this was coming down the pike, they should have traded him. |

So all parties foresaw Calgary overpaying Wideman and that had no effect on the market for comparable/better players?
You should go into real estate. - jmatchett383
UFA's are commonly overpaid in free agency, especially with the scarcity of quality defenseman. That's not exactly a new happening. |

Where can I get one of those crystal balls? - bradleyc4
You don't need a crystal ball. Hell even most fans can figure out what the salary market is for a lot of players in the future, within a reasonable amount give or take. But GM's, players, and player agents can't? When an agent starts a contract negotiation, how do you think they know where to start? That's an agent's job to know and forecast the market. They don't go in blind. Same thing for teams.
I knew and said so many times that the market for Carle was going be in the neighborhood of 5M. |

On locker cleanout day 2012, Paul Holmgren flat out said they had an understanding with the Carle camp and it was for "below market value" of what Carle could get elsewhere. - bmeltzer

Sure, anyone can reasonably assume a range based on comparable players.
However, things change. Comps can get increased wages, which could increase your demands. |

Might be late, but Stars defenseman Patrick Nemeth out for season after getting cut by RJ Umberger's skate Saturday night. That looked scary, but I didn't expect him to be out that long. Hopefully he can recover fully and it won't impact him over the long haul - Jsaquella

Strader is solid. I wish the Flyers would hire him. I don't think he's working for a team now. Going on two decades of Jackson's act. With his cliches. Awful. |

Common, you had to have been an idiot not to see Engelland bumped up to almost $3M per and MDZ cut loose and signing for pennies. It's so predictable, since agents, players and GMs know exactly what's going to happen... before it happens. |

So what some want to beleive, is that the Flyers had a handshake deal for Carle, for under market value. Which by the way, how exactly did Holmgren know what the market value was going to be at the time? See the previous point. But not to digress. So if Carle was willing to sign an under market value deal to stay with the Flyers, that would seem to make an easy no fuss negotiation, that should've taken little time to get done. So that leads to two things. Either the Flyers viewed Grossmann as the more important player. And chose to priorotize signing a stay at home, non mobile defensive defenseman. Over the skilled point producing puck moving all around defenseman. Which would make them incompetent if they did. Which I don't buy. Or that there was no handshake agreement in place, because they couldn't come to an agreement during the season, and chose to table the negotiations to the end of the season. Now I beleive that both sides had interest. But I think once the Flyers decided to pursue Suter, Carle decided to hit the market. |

In that crop, Wideman was not one of the "top available players", behind players like Suter and Carle. So when one of these middle/bottom feeders gets overpaid, the landscape changes for those other players. |
