Except for Homer, who couldn't negotiate with Carle's agent during the season or prior to UFA. |

In that crop, Wideman was not one of the "top available players", behind players like Suter and Carle. So when one of these middle/bottom feeders gets overpaid, the landscape changes for those other players. - jmatchett383
I disagree. Wideman was absolutely considered one of the top available defenseman in that free agent class. Some would've ranked him above Carle. |

The mistake Holmgren made was thinking that outbidding other offers would land him Suter. When he didn't want to play here. |

And they SAY it's onside. - jmatchett383
lord. i was so concerned with including the caps that i used the wrong theyre.
but yes. that. exactly.
but other than that, i find him good enough as an announcer. he has the ability to inflect in his voice the raising of the stakes of a particular play, without being overdramatic or overusing it.
the pens announcers just have such a spew of bewildered arrogance about them. if the team is 0 for 4 on the powerplay, i dont want to hear about ohhhh boy are they due with they way theyve been a knockin on the doorstep all night when they have generated maybe 2 shots on goal. |

You may not agree, but that was the landscape of the UFA defense free agent market at the time. |

i dont mind hockey cliches being on the tad corny from time to time. i get tradition and whimsies and whatnot.
but what gets me is. AAAAND THERE GONNA CALL THAT ICING.
yes jim. because its (frank)ing icing. - stayinthefnnet
Wednesday night should be interesting. Have to think the Pens are going to start beating the Flyers at Consol. No rhyme or reason to the Flyers dominating in that building. The games are usually up and down good old fashion pond hockey. Very entertaining at the very least. Flyers will probably be desperate. Things aren't going to bode well tomorrow night in Chicago. |

So what some want to beleive, is that the Flyers had a handshake deal for Carle, for under market value. Which by the way, how exactly did Holmgren know what the market value was going to be at the time? See the previous point. But not to digress. So if Carle was willing to sign an under market value deal to stay with the Flyers, that would seem to make an easy no fuss negotiation, that should've taken little time to get done. So that leads to two things. Either the Flyers viewed Grossmann as the more important player. And chose to priorotize signing a stay at home, non mobile defensive defenseman. Over the skilled point producing puck moving all around defenseman. Which would make them incompetent if they did. Which I don't buy. Or that there was no handshake agreement in place, because they couldn't come to an agreement during the season, and chose to table the negotiations to the end of the season. Now I beleive that both sides had interest. But I think once the Flyers decided to pursue Suter, Carle decided to hit the market. - MJL

think you guys get spanked in chicago and then come out with a 4 3 victory over the pens.
i agree that there is no logic as to why they do, but they own consol.
speaking of consol, ive seen reports/pictures of the arena with like 4 minutes left and people are leaving. thats absurd. i understand wanting to get a jump on traffic, but come on. |

When the Flyers eliminated the Sabres, and Ruff got hit with a parting shot... (A cup of beer to the chrome dome) Jeanerette went bananas. I was howling. |

To Philadelphia: Jordan Eberle, Jeff Petry and Tyler Pitlick
To Edmonton: Brayden Schenn, Luke Schenn and Robert Hagg

i dont know a ton about pitlick. but i think i would be all over that if i was philly.
eberle is a big upgrade on schenn, although salary concerns could get tricky.
id take petry over luke too. |

I'd be more open to Perron & Petry for the Schenns and another piece. Pitlick is a marginal prospect, and Petry is due for a new deal in July. Perron is a much smaller cap hit than Eberle, plus he's a natural LW. |

yeah perron is an interesting one too. the smaller cap hit is a plus too.
eberles deal is the only thing that gives me pause. |
