They seemed to feed off the early PKs and when they got the goals from Streit & Bellemare, they got confidence and they controlled the game. They did a good job defensively and limited the mistakes. When one occurred, Emery was there to make a stop.
The Pens' 2nd goal was a flukey bounce off MacDonald's skate, and the third was off a bad clear from Del Zotto and an ensuing scramble. But neither really seemed to affect their confidence-like the Montreal game, after the first goal, you could kind of feel the air let out of the balloon...that didn't happen.
Umberger & Read really stepped it up, both had been struggling and it was good to see them have good games.
Now the tough part, and the part they haven't been able to do, build off the good from this game, carry it over to a 60 minute effort in the next game and keep rolling. I'm not going to get excited or giddy over one win. But it could be a good starting point. There's no proof they can consistently bring the combination of effort and execution they did tonight. Which is a big issue for them as a team. - Jsaquella
i missed the first flyers goal and pens second goal, but saw the rest. the pens had a lot of puck luck with posts tonight at both ends. as bad as fleury can be against the flyers and give up strange goals, i've never seen a goalie also get as lucky as he does against them. flyers could have easily had another 3 or 4 goals off miscues and posts. of course the one post the pens hit, the puck goes in the net. i was waiting for a pens pp to immediately follow during which they'd tie the score, and then win the game in a shootout. fortunately that didn't happen.
i saw very little productivity from umberger and read until they actually scored goals. maybe this will give them both a boost.
from a d standpoint, they still make too many passes and plays inside their own end for my liking, including the reverse plays which drive me nuts, but they managed to not get hemmed in like they did during the beginning of the game. i also noticed mdz blew a tire 3 separate times tonight while handling the puck. i seriously hope he had a bad skate. otherwise, wtf?
happy for emery. he really battled, and for the most part controlled his rebounds and tracked the puck well, was solid positionally.
schenn is still pissing me off. |

Emery was incredible, to me -- I know that it is fair to question his salary, as a backup. But I am glad that dude is here, because he can still come up big
He's older, and we all know about the hip. But that dude is tough, and I am glad he is around - AllInForFlyers
i went to the flyers/devils game last january at the rock. flyers were down early by one, and emery kept them in it - he was the only one playing. flyers came back in the 3rd, went up 2-1 only to give up the tying goal in the final minute while on the pp with brodeur pulled. they ended up winning it in OT (schenn iirc on a back door play). anyway...emery impressed the hell out of me that night. he got them those 2 points. his limited lateral mobility/quickness is overblown, imo. he can still play. |

I'm just happy with a win.
The inconsistency still pisses me off, and it's the biggest issue the team faces. Just too many guys can't bring good execution on a regular basis. They'll be in the mix for a wild card slot, be right there in the middle of the league. They won't be down with Buffalo or Carolina, unless there's some injuries, but they're also not likely to lock up a top spot in the division, either.
It's funny. Last year, at 1-7 I had higher expectations than I do at 2-3-1 this year.

He's a warrior, he's going to give you his all every game. Also, his salary is not a big deal, took less to stay. I was a backer of Emery when he first came to Philly and his injury ordeal and comeback made be an even bigger fan.
He was huge tonight for the Flyers. - Jsaquella

Agreed. I love the guy and proud to have him. I remember like yesterday when he was only rumoures to sign here in 2009. 90% of the board was uninteresting due to his recent history at the time. Living proof of maturity. |

Ha! That's funny -- I'm the opposite.
I was effing miserable at this time last season. I couldn't believe the way they quit on Laviolette. I couldn't believe the way they quit on themselves in that Washington game until Emery went berserk. And I didn't even condone that from him. But last year, this team looked dead in the water. I remember that tweet about how Paul Holmgren sprinted to the dressing room during the Washington game.
This year? Man, they've got the problems that we all see. And without Coburn, this team is hard-pressed to not give up three a night. TBH, I'm not certain they can.
But if they get Coburn back, and maybe make one sneaky little deal for some kind of defenseman who can skate a little and help them PK...I have said many times that it's gonna be ugly, some nights. But I feel good about where they could be after 82 games.
Getting there, mind you...there's gonna be a couple of nights like last night, most likely. But after 82, I think they get there.
I hope.

Trust me, I hear you. I think Del Zotto's been good enough for a third-pair defenseman, but we can all see the softness on the PK and on the starts in the defensive zone.
I don't know if there's anyone out there, but if they can find a way to replace Timonen's hockey sense on the PK and in their own end, I think they're dangerous, still.

Oh, yeah: I hate this normally, but this particular roster screams for the Flyers to play seven defensemen.
If the coach doesn't love Akeson and we're gonna go round and round with Jones/Vandevelde/Akeson, then that's one way to replace Timonen: With two guys. Del Zotto's offense as required, and a seventh guy with hockey sense and defensive ability for the tough minutes who keeps Luke Schenn from getting exposed. |

Enjoy this win. It was fun! Who knows how many of these we will see?
Bellemare played his ass off tonight and every game before this. He's miscast on his current line, but damn, he plays with speed and passion.
He belongs. |

Have to look at the game situations. What were the circumstances? Did Raffl just get done killing a penalty? Sometimes that happens in a hockey game. Rinaldo has played well this season. - MJL

Do you know what also is fair? Giving a player coming to a new team a chance to adjust. It's not uncommon for a player coming to a new team to struggle a little at first. Remember Streit this time last year? How he was a bust and a bad signing? There's nothing wrong with saying a player didn't have a good game or isn't playing well. But that is quite different then stating he's a bust, or a corpse, or a line killer after 5 games. - MJL

Not a suspendable play. Simply a 2 minute minor for interference.
