Flyers should look into Dennis Wideman, if it's not too pricey. |

I was at a buddy's house last season. He's a big homebrew guy and we were drinking his new batch.
Anyhow, his router was down and I wanted to watch a game. I had another friend's login info, so I went on my iPod to watch and clicked on the Flyers game to just see if it worked...it did, so I decided on GCL.

I don't have a lot of confidence that he has a good handle on slotting players in roles that allow them to best utilize their respective talents. I also don't agree with how he runs his lineups at times...but I'm not the coach and he is...so I'm just hoping he doesn't do something with Ghost that could be detrimental, since he'll be the one in control. - exlund
All seems like it's based on Akeson. I think Akeson is being given far too much credit as an NHL player. He's being used where he is, because he's not better then any of the other players ahead of him in the lineup. A players icetime and role is based on how well he plays. |

So according to panotch the flyers have been trying to get a defenseman and the asking price is Brayden schenn... I have to then ask: if that's the case why the (frank), don't we have a new Dman

Any idea what defenseman the return would be? And if not, then how can you ask that?

Not that much of an upgrade, if at all, on the current blueline-despite a good start to this season. Has 3 years left at $5.25mm, is 31 years old and would eat up a nice chunk of cap space when the Flyers are going to need to re-sign Couturier, Brayden Schenn and Voracek.
He's a solid offensive guy, but he's not very good in his own end, not especially physical and is plagued with the same kind of inconsistent play issues that most of the current group battles.
If he was a pending UFA, I might have interest, but those extra years make me say no.

Not that much of an upgrade over our current group? Are you freaking kidding?!?!?! MacDonald makes over 5 mil a season but you're not ok with adding Wideman for 5.25? He's not that much of an upgrade over Nick Schultz, Grossmann, Del Zotto or Luke Schenn? Can I have some of what you're smoking please? I'm with you that Wideman isn't a stud in his own zone, but he's far from a liability. I guess the season a few years ago when he was a plus 32 is just a lucky coincidence? Playing for Florida, Calgary and Washington will make you look pretty bad defensively too. But for arguments sake, I'll just give you that he's not the greatest in his own zone. However, he makes up for most of it with his transition game, his outlet passes and his ability to move the puck up the ice with the best of them. When he's on top of his game, he is a top ten offensive defensemen. Besides when was the last time the Flyers had a right handed defenseman that moved the puck up the ice and was a major threat in the offensive zone? Desjardins? That's another thing they've been missing for forever. A right handed shot. Five million a season isn't jack for what he brings to a team. You act like his contract would single handily handcuff the Flyers for years to come, but that's not the case at all. A Phanuef like contract might, but the only Flyer making big time money is Giroux. You trade Grossmann to a team that needs help at the deadline and you're spending less than 2 mil for a major upgrade on D. You think he's not a big upgrade to what the Flyers have now? Look at who's dressing tonight... I mentioned above, they have Michael Del Zotto, Luke Schenn, not so promising rookie Mark Alt, Nik Grossmann, and Nick Schultz. I mean if I even have to begin to explain to you how all 5 of those guys are 6th/7th defensemen, then you need to watch more games. Dennis Wideman would be a HUGE upgrade over those guys. HUGE. The idiotic statement that he's not that much of an upgrade over the current group is maybe the most asinine statement I've heard in a long time. The Flyers defense is trash bro. Open your eyes. The Flyers need all the help they can get on the blue line. |

Wideman, in conjuction with MacDonald, is the issue. I have no desire to pay $10.25mm for the next three years to Wideman & AMac.
Within a couple years, I expect the good, young defensemen in the system to fill in as Grossmann and others move out. Just have zero desire to add another one way guy like Wideman for the money and term he has left.
He's a better, right handed version of MDZ who makes almost $4mm more against the cap. I pass. |

So are you taking back what you said about him not being "that much of an upgrade" over our current group then? You're saying you don't want him because of the salary? You think having Wideman and MacDonald would put us in cap hell? The Flyers are currently spending about 23 mil a season on defensemen. If they traded Grossmann and brought in Wideman, that number would only go up to about 25 mil. The cap is roughly 64 mil and most likely increasing every year. Wideman is only 31. That's not old at all for an offensive, puck moving defenseman. Look at Streit and Timonen. Puck moving defensemen have much longer careers due to the less amount of pounding their body takes compared to shut down, physical defenseman. I can see if you were concerned about having Phanuef and Niskanen on the same team, making a combined 13-14 mil and not worth it, but Wideman and MacDonald together making a combined 10 mil is a far cry from being a make or break type burden. Wideman deserves 5.25 mil a season. Nobody calls him overpaid. Mind you that you're saying you're cool paying Grossmann 3.5 mil a season but not ok with paying 1.75 mil more for a guy like Wideman? That 1.75 scares you that bad? You can stop now dude. You make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Next time think before you say something is a terrible idea just to try to look smart when you clearly have no clue about what you're talking about. You just ruin your creditability on this site and nobody will take you serious or wanna engage in a conversation with you. |

By the way, nice last second edit on your original post after you realized how clueless you really are about this convo. Did you really just edit your post to say Wideman is just a slightly better version of Del Zotto? Please let me get some of what you're smoking. Del Zotto isn't even a third of the player Wideman is. That's absolutely ridiculous. Just stop now before you lose all of your creditability with each bonehead statement you say. First you say Wideman isn't much of an upgrade over Del Zotto, Luke Schenn, Nik Schultz or Nik Grossmann. Now you wanna say Wideman is basically the same player as Del Zotto, just right handed? You are officially on the do not respond to this troll list. As if there aren't enough drunken slobs in here making us Flyers fans look dumb enough already. I'm begging you to stop. |

Plenty of people do engage me in conversation, and plenty more consider Wideman over paid. The amount he makes over Grossmann or Schenn isn't the issue. The fact is I'm not comfortable paying yet another one way defenseman, who isn't anything special $5.25mm a year when they already have big financial commitments for long terms to Streit & MacDonald and have several good youngsters on the verge of contributing in a year or two.
You obviously are incapable of discussion without resorting to name calling, so by all means ignore me. I will do the same to you in the future |
