This isn't a popular opinion, but going all-in on Pronger too soon with the original post-06 core was where it started to go wrong. Instead of a future 5-7 year window to win, Homer banked on Pronger pushing them over the top immediately. That group just wasn't ready yet, and they got caught with too many of their eggs in the Pronger basket. - Tomahawk
We saw a Final in 2010 after seeing an eastern conference final in 2008. What do you mean not ready? |

I think Seguin is headed in that direction. Would you have considered Scott Hartnell a star at any time in the past? How about Wayne Simmonds now? - MJL
Yes, and yes. |

Well then we definitely have a different definition of what a star is. A star is a player that is set above, not a dime a dozen.

I would have rather had Carter then, and I would rather have him now. Carter is simply a better player. he was better when he was on the Flyers, and he is better now.
edit: I mean over Richards, then and now. I still love the return we got for both players. - MBFlyerfan
I'm within the belief that Carter and Richards would have continued to be good players as Flyers because they played much bigger roles. I sometimes believe the Captaincy is a burden on Claude Giroux. He tries to do too much at times and allowed his frustration to get the better of him. |

Mostly not having enough depth at all positions, and all the maturity issues. Given a bit more time, and a few more complementary players, I think that core could have been a perennial threat, a la Chicago. Then bring in a Pronger (or whoever) as the cherry on top. |

JvR and Phil Kessel are the two bright spots on an awful team. Phaneuf should be a much better player than what he's shown. Jonathan Bernier is in the same position as Steve Mason right now, in terms of needing a carry over from last season. |

1) see the most amazing Datsukian move tonight in a Philly loss
2) see Ghost score a couple in a losing cause |

You're right, that's not a good description. I think that there are superstars such as Crosby, Stamkos, Ovechkin, Malkin. Then there are stars such as Giroux, Perry, Getzlaff, Kessel. Then there are players the next level down, which is where JVR, Hartnell in his best years, and Simmonds now are, in my opinion. |

I really like our team but I think the Flyers are really feeling the effects of set backs due to deals that were and were not made. Pronger was a huge loss but it's not just Pronger anymore. |

So the term "all star" isn't really an indication of who the real "stars" are? |

You've got a pretty unconventional definition, then.
I think most of us would consider G, Perry, Kessel and Getz comfortably in the superstar category. |

The Flyers are feeling a setback right now due to one position. Defense. It's not on the level that the forward talent is. And they're paying the price for failing to draft and develop defenseman well.

Superstar is a rare category. That's the difference. Players like Crosby, Stamkos, Ovechkin, and Malkin are above those players.

Money aside, I would choose JvR over Simmonds. When comparing contracts, Simmonds is the clear cut option. |
