"The suspension was imposed under Section 18-A.5 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which provides that, during the pendency of a criminal investigation, "The League may suspend the Player pending the League's formal review and disposition of the matter where the failure to suspend the Player during this period would create a substantial risk of material harm to the legitimate interests and/or reputation of the League."

According to a statement from the Redondo Beach Police Department on Monday afternoon, Voynov was arrested on a charge of 273.5(a) P.C."

The NFL did nothing and the public wasn't all that upset as a whole until the video was released. Then everyone was calling for his head, yet we knew EXACLTY what happened in that elevator months earlier. No video for Voynov plus hockey players are seen as the "gentlemen of sports" for some reason and by that I mean people think they're not "thugs" and "criminals" like NBA and NFL players. Of course part of this has to do with race whether people want to admit it or not. I refuse to get into that here though.

No Kopitar, no Gaborik, no Voynov, 11 forwards. We must compete here.

I agree with their decision. The NFL completely botched the situation with Rice. It was also an interesting sociological event in terms of the visual evidence vs. only the narrative of what happened and how each elicited a different response from most people. To me, some people seem to think of the Voynov thing in a lot less harsh terms than they did with the pre-video Rice situation.

I have zero issue with the NHL's response. It was immediate and powerful.

Flyers have competed in all games but the Chicago game. Well I guess technically they didn't compete against the Red Wings even though they won the game. The third period of the Montreal game was brutal as well.

Just not many reliable options on the backend right now. It's going to be tough with this defense core for the next month.

I'm a little worried about Mason. He's been hung out to dry in the games he has played. I hope his confidence hasn't been shaken. His GAA, and save % read like something straight out of 1983.

I agree. I think they should have been more proactive on Varlamov too but it was probably a bit of a shock and now it seems they are learning. I'm sure there would be a similar response next time. Personally, I am happy to see hockey becoming more then just entertainment. The emphasis on the Canadian Anthem after the shootings, kids with less known forms of cancer dropping pucks, ice bucket challenge, sustainability report, etc. I think it is good for everyone.

I agree, it was the right decision and an easy one to make after the NFL's example.

I thought that happened with Giroux a while back when he was in Juniors
- PhillySportsGuy

Giroux was recalled under emergency recall, but I think that was under a different rule. The other rule is about cap space.

The reason Varlamov didn't get suspended like this was because that happened before the Ray Rice debacle. The NHL probably wouldn't have suspended Voynov like this either if the Rice thing never happened.

You may be right but I don't think so. I think the NHL is much more sensitive to this kind of stuff.

Jeff Marek was saying he talked to someone at the league last week and they had seen photos of the victim in the Voynov case and that they said it was beyond bad.

They may be more sensitive as a whole, but I think the severity of the punishment is directly related to the Ray Rice scandal.

I don't think so. The NHL has always turned a blind eye to domestic abuse going back decades. They've systematically wiped their hands of it until Voynov followed in Ray Rice's shoes.

The leagues (because it happens in all) are essentially amoral, in a way, and morality only comes from public outcry. If x player hits his wife and she presses charges, and it doesn't turn into a big media thing, it dies out. The Rice thing had died out in the same way, more or less, until the video surfaced.

Look up Bobby Hull and work your way forward.

The one that got me was Sean Burke beating his pregnant wife and dragging her out of the car and leaving her. A couple years later he was a Flyer.

Edit: He got sensitivity training or something ridiculous.

Agreed, and that is how most norms and laws are created in a society. I think we are heading in the right direction here.

Agreed. Americans, maybe humans in general, are very reactive when it comes to stuff like this. I wish we were more proactive but what can I do.

Well, it is a league full of thugs. That's not racist, it's a broad generalization backed up by solid fact.

Why don't we deserve Simmonds? Because a London fan threw a banana at him?

- jmatchett383

So the league that has guys who punch each other in the face and swing sticks at each other, elbow each other in the head, is the league without thugs?

While the league with a majority of minority players who simply talk tough and dress differently for cameras, where fighting and leaving the bench leads to suspensions, is the league full of thugs.

My cultural understanding never ceases to grow on the Internet

Weird thing I was pondering at work. If we want Schenn to play center, would you trade Vinny for Stephen Weiss? I think Weiss can play wing where Vinny can't. Just curious as I think age is the same and soe are the deals.
