So... when are people going to realize that the "T" in OTL doesn't stand for Tie and the "L" actually stands for Loss?
"The Flyers now find themselves one game over .500."
no.
"Somehow, some way, the Flyers (4-3-2) will crawl out of a once-horrifying October riddled with land mines and injuries guaranteed at least a .500 record. They can be as many as two games over even with a victory in Tampa Bay tomorrow night."
no.
Even if you go by pts. they have 10 and have given up 12.
I'm stunned that they're getting out of October with at least 10 pts but accuracy folks, accuracy. - mayorofangrytown
That isn't correct.
The accurate way is to view through points gained vs points available.
They have played nine games. In the standings, those games are worth a maximum of two points to the victor.
Therefore, those games are worth 18 points.
The Flyers have 10 points, by virtue of winning four, losing three and splitting the points available in two.
They didn't lose. They only got one of the two points available.
They are one game over .500.

You can also look at as the max points they could have right now is 18, they have 10 or .556%
Also points given up is misleading. For example giving up an extra OT point to LA, a Western Conf. team is meaningless.

Hopefully, this will make you very, very angry.... an overtime loss isnt really a loss. You just didnt win. Its like when your favorite soccer team loses in penalty kicks.. you didnt lose, you merely failed to advance.
Be angry for me. Please? - Doc_Sarcasm
An OTL is a real loss, IMO, regardless of points. A SOL is a fake loss like losing in penalty kicks. |

When you've won in the past, people see stick breaking as a sign of your competitiveness.
When you haven't won, people see stick breaking as a sign of being weak mentally or even immaturity.

It would make more sense to me if a regulation/OT win was worth 3 pts and an regulation/OT loss worth zero. Shootouts could remain the same, 2 pts to the winner, 1 to the loser |

Both of those quotes came from reporters and weren't quotes from the team.
They should strive to be better than that. |

It's fine the way it is -- seriously. It is. People overthink this.
Before shootouts, games ended in ties. Teams would get only one point. Fine.
But you still could lose in OT, just like you do now...and you would get one point. The other team would get the extra point.
The only thing that has changed is that the shootout means someone gets that extra point every single time.
It only would matter if the NHL made it so the loser in overtime got no points. That would be a loss. |

I think it's at a point where it's such a commonly held idea that reporters don't think twice. I think it probably originated from teams trying to sound better than they really were but now it's accepted lexicon. |

Just for clarifications sake, when the NHL first instituted OT, the loser got zero pts, and there were still ties. All games were worth a max of 2 points. The problem began as soon as some games were worth 2 pts while some worth 3. Its a flawed system |

You can't be serious -- this is just math. Bill and the reporters are right, because a SO loss isn't really a loss, mathematically. It just isn't - you got one of two points available.
If you finish 0-0-82, how many points do you have? 82.
If you finish 82-0-0, how many points do you have? 164.
Ok. If another team beats you in the shootout 82 times, how many points do you have? 82. How points do they have? 164.
The math says it all: You are a .500 team. Because you split the points available.
