Are you a semanticist? Answer ONE question with a simple yes or no.
Have the Flyers won more games than they have lost? - jak521
No, they have not won more games they they have lost. And it has zero to do with semantics. And everthing to do with how the NHL standings are calculated according to the NHL. |

It's still an opinion that this is the authoritative definition of a .500 team. - BulliesPhan87
He's missing the point you're making. The Flyers have 50% of possible points so they are .500. The Flyers won 4 or 9 games so they are not .500. No one is wrong for believing either one of these things.
It is a fact that the Flyers have 50% of the points they could have.
It is a fact that the Flyers have won 44.4% of their games. |

It's not my opinion. It's a fact in that's how the NHL calculates the standings. If it was based on my opinion of what I think a .500 team should be, I would say the Flyers aren't a .500 team. But my opinion doesn't matter, just like any other fans opinion of what a .500 team is, or what it should be. The NHL has determined how the standings are calculated. And it's based on points. And the Flyers are an above .500 team in points. |

I think you're on to something...
"The Flyers are not .500 because they haven't won half their games!"
"Wrong, the Flyers are .500 because they have half the points they could have!"
"I'm not talking about points, I'm talking about wins!"
"Well you're wrong because that's not what the NHL uses in the standings!"
"That's ok because that's not what I'm talking about!"
"Well you're wrong!"
"But I'm not talking about what you're talking about!"
"But if I act like you are, that makes you wrong and me right! So there!"

The standings are indeed calculated that way. There's no authority on which method is used to formally bestow ".500 status" on a team, therefore it's opinion.

Yes it is. Because if I dismiss the official standings from the equation, and how the NHL calculates those standings. And give my opinion on what I think should qualify a team to be considered .500. Then the answer would be different. |

No matter how you slice it, the Flyers are not a .500 team.
They have won 4/9 games for a win% of 44.44%.
They have earned 10 out of a possible 18 points for a points percentage of 55.55%. |

So what? You're assuming that being labeled a .500 team makes any kind of difference when in reality it means nothing. So going by points or going by wins is up to the person. |

I get a kick out of it when one side is equally involved in the debate, and then proceeds to try and belittle the other side for continuing in the debate.
But I digress. Yes, there is an authority on how a team is determined to be a .500 team. That authority is the NHL. Just because you or I, or anyone else disagrees with how it is calculated. Such as how wins in the shootout are awarded. Doesn't change the facts. |
