The issue is the not every game has the same point value. Where some games are 3 point games, and some are 2 point games, totally changes winning percentages.
Either 0 points for overtime and shootout, or go with 3 pts for regulation win, 2 points for OT/SO win and 1 point for overtime/shottout losses.
Today the Flyers point percentage is really .455 they have gained 10 points out of 22 that have been awarded in their games to date. They have played 4 games that went beyond 60 minutes, so 9 games of 2 points plus 4 games at 3 points.
In the 3 point per win system they would be at .444 having 12 points out of 27 total. At least with the 3 point per game system, there is uniformity, one game is not worth more or less than any other game. - flyhoc
We all know that flaw exists in the system. And as was stated earlier, you shouldn't get any points for losing the game. But that's not how it is.
And the reason why you formula is wrong in how many points the Flyers have eraned, is because it is impossible for one team to earn all 3 points in a game where 3 points are awarded between both sides. |

I'm not interpreting anything. That's what you're missing. I'm simply going by what the NHL says. if I was giving my own interpretation and opinion, I'd state that the Flyers aren't a .500 team. But I've removed opinion from the equation, and just used the facts. - MJL
You are either not understanding or are just being difficult.
"Sally says the Flyers are an above .500 team because they have more than 50% of possible points. Jack says the Flyers are a sub .500 team because they have won less than half their games."
These are both facts. The NHL uses a point system but that doesn't mean Jack has to go by point percentage. ".500 Team" isn't like "goal". A goal is clearly defined, both as a physical act and within the language of the NHL rule book. ".500" is not. It is a subjective term depending on which set of facts you choose. |

And if you look at the standings, you'll see that the Rangers have more wins then the Flyers do, but yet they are in the 5th spot, and the Flyers are in the 4th. It's not an opinion, it's the official standings of the NHL. Unless you feel that the standings the NHL puts out are just the NHL's opinion. Then my statement that the Flyers are an above .500 team is not an opinion, but it is indeed a fact. - MJL
So what is the tie breaker here?
1.The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
9 GP each
2.The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout. This figure is reflected in the ROW column.
4 ROW each
3.The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.
N/A
4.The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season. NOTE: In standings a victory in a shootout counts as one goal for, while a shootout loss counts as one goal against.
-3 each

Exactly...
So say in a 2-1-0 scenario (Reg. or Ot win- SO win- loss)
Team A wins 42 games, 40 of which are in regulation or OT.
That would be 82 points. 40 x 2 =80 +2=82
Team B wins 45 games, 35 of which are regulation or OT.
That would be 70 points +10 from shootout wins +80 points..
So despite "winning" 3 more games, they would have 2 fewer points.
It would put an emphasis on winning the game during regulation and OT.
0 points for any loss. - jak521
how about 2 points for a win in regulation or OT, 1 for a SO win, 1 for a OTL and 0 for a SO loss. Of course that said teams that are good in the SO may try to play total defense while teams who are typically Flyers in the SO may go all out which leaves them open to mistakes. eh who knows what is best besides scrapping the SO

They are not both facts in the official NHL standings. You are either not understanding, or being diffcult in not realizing that using the NHL standings and how it is calculated, removes individual opinion from the equation. |

The Flyers have 55.6% of the possible points and have won 44.4% of their games. Those are the only facts. |

It is accepted vernacular.
Used in a sentence.
"Did you see those sick swishy's that cool cat had on?"
"Nope, but I surely heard them! Ha ha. Swishy's are loud!"

So did I. Funny thing is, I took the same class the next year and got a "A." The entire class failed the class the first time, and he curved everyone's grade. |
