Which is why Paul wrote about Shane Heyer -- and old friend of his -- having bad positioning on the play where Foligno got hurt the other day. Trust me, he isn't afraid to say what he thinks.
I know because I'm the one who talks to him on the phone several days per week and edits his blogs. - bmeltzer
I was speaking in generalities. It's usually along the lines of, "Well, referees have an unforgiving job and the new refs are just doing as they're told, so it's not their fault." But yes, on occasion, he will fault a ref when something blatant happens. |

[q+-uote=GOA88]Flyers just dont match up well against them. Also Tampa has hated the Flyers for years but the Flyers dont really care. Tampa is playing a rivalry game while the Flyers are heading in as "just another game".
Seems like we should be the ones hating them. 2004 certainly comes to mind and the beatings we have taken on an annual basis from them. |

From working with Paul for a year, I have learned that the first thing to look at is the referee's positioning, then to the details of the play and lastly to whether or not it was simply a missed call.

Leggo appeared to "referee by result" last night and not in a judgement call kind of way. |

Paul and Colin Campbell intensely dislike one another, both personally and professionally. |

He was in the corner, somehow didn't see Holtby fall on his own and (mistakenly) assumed he'd been tripped. Shouldn't have made any call at all. |

I am actually glad Detroit came back and won the game. If they lost a game on a call like that it would have been brutal.

I think the same thing! That loss might sting as much as 2010. How can the lightning be simply brushed off? |

Is it an option for him to talk to a linesman or something if he didn't see it? Or even better, since he didn't see it and play resulted in a goal.....defer to the war room?
Because it was clear that he guessed at what happened. |

Yes... He could have made no call, conferred with the other officials and asked if they saw something. Unfortunately, there's an old adage in officiating; "Be careful about putting your arm up, because you can't put it back down." It is very rare that a penalty call gets reversed.

So the GM decides whether or not he is in the AHL lineup? Cool, didn't know that. - jmatchett383
You must have overlooked the first sentence in my post, which said the coach decides who plays on each team. |

I used to like Stewart's blogs, they were fun stories. Now he just feels the need to defend NHL officials no matter what and to prove how masculine, chivalrous, and loyal he is. Kerry Fraser's blogs are much more unbiased. - jmatchett383
Have to agree there. Also calls a lot of people out, who probably have no idea it's even been done. |

Me too. It was an ugly game to watch. Each team was on the PP every time you turned it on. There was no flow to the game. I bet Ovie must have played well over 20 minutes
Edirt: 19:51. I guess Trotz isn't letting him stay out for the entire PP like the others have. |

The Lindros thing did it for me. Turk Evers even came out and said he has no idea what Stewart was talking about and said Stewart could call him up to try to clear the air. Guess it's more important to be the good guy and paint the guy you didn't like as the villain instead of getting the story straight. |

Emery's played better to date, no doubt. I'd argue that the team had also played marginally better defense in those games. Still, 9 games in, Emery has played better than Mason. - jmatchett383
I agree, and I have no problem with them playing Emery as long as he's doing well and feeling fine physically.
But there's no reason to worry about Mason. His stats look bad because there were 8 goals against NJ and Dallas that he had no chance on. |

TODAY IN FLYERS HISTORY: OCTOBER 30
I also saw on the twitter machine that this is also the date that, back in 1969, some skinny diabetic kid from Manitoba scored his first NHL goal.

Also he was a referee for a long time. I'm sure he made plenty of bad calls, and mistakes. Also for a self proclaimed hot head. I'm sure he also blew up on some people only later to realize he was at fault. I'd like to hear a more unbiased view from both sides of right and wrong. |
