Not much of an all round play maker. A pure sniper who can shoot and score. No question. I look at G as an all round play maker and a much better play than Kessel. - 3flyerkids
Kessel had 43 assists last year, and that's with the large number of shots he took. Giroux is a better passer and set up player. But offensively as a whole, they are pretty close.

Here's my 2 cents just in case we don't already have enough opinions thrown out there..
At the time of the trade I was indifferent. I thought we traded JVR when his value was probably lower than it should have been due to the recent injuries he was dealing with. I feel like we could have got a lot more in return if we had waited a bit longer to trade him.
With that said, at the time of the trade, I think it was close to equal value for both sides when you consider you're basically trading for each players potential. I could be mistaken but at the time Schenn still had the potential to be a top pairing dman who can eat tons of minutes who is also right handed(which is sometimes overlooked but I think was a big part of it) In hindsight, we obviously lost but if each player met their potential each team would have walked away with exactly what they needed.
You obviously hate the trade now in retrospect but what really grinded my gears was when it was later reported (I forget by who) that we turned down an offer at the time with the Coyotes for JVR/Yandle straight up. Sure you lose whatever potential Schenn might have but the Flyers would have been getting exactly what they were looking for minus the right handed shot and JVR would have been shipped out west and we would only have to see him twice a year. - Roytastic
That's a nice objective post. But personally, if I recall that report came from Pannacio. And I wouldn't put much stock in it.

Yea like I said, I really can't recall who it was. But if it was I would agree that you have to take what he says with a grain of salt. But I do remember there being rumours before the trade that we might have been in talks with Arizona about trading for a dman. |

Francis took over the biggest poop show in the league.
I can only hope Rutherford causes a fraction of that damage in Pittsburgh. |

Same could be said about Chris Pronger who was an elite defenceman. He was big and slow just like Schenn. If Schenn can get his Hockey IQ up he could be a more effective Dman. He still has at least 3 years before he hits his prime. What we see is likely what we get at this point but he still has time to prove us wrong. - xShoot4WarAmpsx
Pronger as a young player was not slow, and had good footwork and turning ability. Also had a high level of hockey sense and very high-end puck skills although it took him until his fourth season and second in St. Louis to become anything resembling a consistent player. With Pronger back then, the main issue was a lack of maturity. |

Trust me, as good as Kessel is, he goes into serious pointless slumps because of the lack of playmaking. |

His first chance to do some damage will be Fluery's new contract. |

He's been pretty much a point per game player for the last 3 seasons. Pretty hard to do that going into serious pointless slumps. |

It doesn't mean he isn't streaky. He plays in a fish bowl and is watched pretty closely |

Not that I'm aware of. Point a game for the last 3 years is pretty consistent.

If he is streaky, then a lot of players in the League are.

Looking at his game log, he didn't finish last year real strong with only 7 points in the last 16 games I believe. If he is considered one of the most streaky player in the league, I'm not aware of it. I see point a game totals for the last 3 seasons, and wonder how streaky can he be!

You are right he is streaky. He may get his points but he doesn't bring much else to his game. No heart, no desire to back check, win battles along boards.
Every player can go games without scoring but if that is the case you hope he can go out and play a solid game. Kissel will either score or do absolutely NOTHING! |

ive said it a bunch of times that i really dont think luke schenn will ever be anything special, but at the time that was a much less certain fact than it appears to be now. its not the greatest of analogies, but tyler myers has been on tougher times recently, and his asking price is still a huge premium due to the potential he still has as an asset.
and for better or worse, i think the flyers looked at a stretch they had in which JVR was out and the offense didnt really suffer so much, and felt like they could deal from an area of expendable strength to address an area of weakness that is traditionally very difficult to acquire, even if it meant taking a slight hit on the overall value. - stayinthefnnet
Cap hit figured into it, too. They needed to lighten the load a bit, and I feel like Homer thought he might have overpaid JvR on that extension.
Difference between Schenn, and most other highly-picked D prospects, is that his absolute ceiling was Brooks Orpik. Even on draft day, and the talk of him being a franchise guy, nobody was under any illusions that he was going to contribute much offensively due to very obvious limitations.
Maybe in 2002, that kind of player was worth a top-six winger... at the time of the trade though, not so much.

A lot of Kessel's assists come from him shooting, much like Jeff Carter when he played here and let's not forget that JvR is a crease crasher. Kessel also plays for a team where they virtually have nothing and nobody else to lean on. Kessel is not the player Giroux is for this team. |

I have a hard time believing that 600K difference factored into it. I do however feel they got cold feet at the length of the deal. Schenn was drafted 5th overall, so I think his ceiling was considered higher then that at the time. |

An assist is an assist. And when you play on a team where they virtually have nothing and nobody else to lean on. It makes it that much harder to put up points.

Pronger was not slow for his size and he possessed elite level hockey sense and skills with the puck. Schenn has neither and never did. Schenn's upside, when drafted, was Adam Foote, leadership guy and shutdown defenseman.
Pronger, form the second he was drafted, was seen as a franchise defenseman and elite player. |

No question, there is no comparison between the two players. Then, now, or ever.
