It's been almost 30 years since Buffalo has been able to pull that off and 2 of the picks were acquired via trades. 82-87 they had 6 top 10 picks. 3 being top 5 and only one being 4 or better.

I really thought the Sabres would be around 5th from the bottom. Gionta, Georges. No way they see McDavid/Eichel. Boy was I wrong.

I never made any mention that buffalo was on par with Edmonton in terms of draft picks. I didn't even hint at that being the point of my original retort.

I see the lottery teams as the ones with the opportunity at getting the first overall. Which has generally been the consensus. U can spin the technicalities how u like, but nobody considers the 8th player chosen a lottery pick.
Either way, that was never really the point.

Point is, a lot needs to go right for you to achieve success after a rebuild. Like the pens, kings, and hawks went through before turning the corner. many years of losing, getting lucky on a few later picks, getting lucky on a trade or two, biding your time for the right move. And then also being a desirable destination for free agents. Etc etc etc.
It's not a black and white template by any means.

Anyways...

I just have fond memories of Nolans last time coaching here. No one was good except for the goalie, but they tried to win.

The problem here is that the goaltender masked a lot of those deficiencies, even 1996 and 1997. There's this notion that we're supposed to have a monopoly on heart and desire here, and that's simply not the case. The opponent wants to win just as badly, and the opponent also happens to have an exponentially more talent as well.
