I would expect that type of ebb and flow depending on the GM and current farm system make up. It looks like the Flyers have been more successful at it than most teams, at least in terms of forwards. Defense is a different story, I'm sure. Bobrovsky was a free agent signing in goal though.
- NickTheKid87

he was, and a total coup, which they of course ruined 5 minutes later. don't get me wrong, i'm happy with mason, but i would have preferred to keep bob, maybe for no other reason than he was homegrown so to speak, and clearly had more talent and potential than any flyers goalie in recent or distant memory.

The list included several guys who were drafted-Umberger, Froese, Busniuk and in Kerr's case, he fell undrafted because his draft year was the season the draft class was swelled-when they lowered the age to 18-meaning the draft class doubled in size and quality.

Not surprisingly, seems like there are more top dmen and goalies that fall through the cracks. Chances of getting a legit top-six forward via undrafted UFA is pretty close to nil.

I think we might have two in Raffl and Bellemare. They're definitely top 9 material.

Yes, so were Sinisalo and Kindrachuk. Not saying the Flyers were not very active in past years in signing undrafted UFAs. However, under Holmgren, after the Pronger trade and subsequent deals to fill the void, they were very aggressive in not just signing undrafted UFAs that made the NHL, but to stock the AHL team, and to a lesser extent, the ECHL team.

It appears to be easier to get an NHL-caliber forward as undrafted UFAs than dmen or goalies but easier to find a really good dman or goalie than forward. I think that mostly has to do with D and goalies developing later than forwards, plus teams may take more chances on forwards during the draft.

The Flyers have the most undrafted forwards of all NHL teams with 4. Most of these players are bottom 6/4th line forwards.

I only counted players that were signed as undrafted free agents and are still on their respective teams. To judge how will teams have done signing undrafted players, we'd probably need to do all the undrafted UFAs by the team they were signed by (i.e. St. Louis = CGY)

Yeah, pretty much.

Good forwards are pretty much picked clean by round 3 of the draft.
