The late Richard Kiel. I can't believe he was typecast. He played the same type of character all the time.

You mean...you can leave a guy at one position on a certain line and give him time to grow into it?

It wasn't even just pursuing those guys that lost us Jagr. I think it was clear they wanted to get that keep top six spots open for young guys like Voracek, Simmonds, and Schenn to have instrumental roles on the team. I was ok with the reasoning at the time.

In retrospect though, I wish we had kept him. Hell, if we have to have a veteran scorer I would take Jagr nine days a day over Lecavalier.

I was mad when he left too. Carle as well. Poorly done that summer

They did almost get Weber. Even Bill thought Nashville wouldn't match among other experts and analysts. That would've atoned for everything else tenfold.

The real problem was drafting Mike Ricci one spot ahead of Jagr in 1990.

I think the Nashville owners had to go into their own pocket (outside of team revenue) to meet that offer sheet. The Flyers gambled (and lost) that they wouldn't do that.

I actually do remember Ricci as being fairly highly rated at the time.

But young Jagr with the mullet would have been pretty awesome.....until we traded him away to Quebec for Eric Lindros......

If Voracek needed Jagr to keep him in line then that says to me that Voracek is not going to succeed in the NHL. I always thought letting Jagr go was blown out of proportion. Like Giroux was never going to have success without Jagr either. Some fans were acting like Jagr was holding everything together and without him everything is doomed.
- NickTheKid87

I agree to a certian extent. I felt it was important to let Jagr go, to let younger players such as Voracek take that spot.

Speaking 1990's Flyers drafts.....the 1992 draft is an utter abomination.

Ryan Sittler? Jason Bowen? Denis Metlyuk?

Woof.

Berube was asked today after practice what Scott Hartnell brought to the team and whether he is missed by the club. Chief's response was blunt and then he softened it a bit so as not to come off as ripping Hartnell.

"I don't know if anything is missed. I mean. he's a good guy. He did a lot for the team and the organization. We all like him from outside the hockey rink to on the ice. He's a good player and good in the room. But people move on that's the way it is. I have nothing against Hartsy and he's a friend of mine," said Berube.

Last week, after Raffl got hurt and VandeVelde was briefly put on the Giroux line, Ron Hextall said, "In my opinion, even last year, Raffl was the best guy we had on that line to play with Giroux and Voracek."

A lot of those mid-90s drafts had few star players in the top rounds compared to the mid-late 00's. I mean, there were guys like Jason Bonsignore and Denis Shvidki who were locks to be superstars.

Very possible, also don't count out the loss of Macleish. Scotty Bowman has said that with Macleish injured they were able to concentrate on just shutting down Clarke. The Flyers biggest strengths in the cup years were goaltending and center. With Macleish out (knee injury) and Bernie at far less than 100% they had no chance against Montreal.

However, even with a depleted lineup, each of the first 3 games were one goal games and I believe the Flyers actually had the lead in 2 of them at one point. The LCB line, especially Leach, singlehandedly kept them in the first 3 games.

I always felt Stephenson gave up 1-2 softies each game.

Not a good NHL draft year in general. But you have to go back to what was going on the time. The Flyers had to make their first pick in a pinch -- they thought the pick had been traded to Quebec and then got held up when the Nords traded Lindros a second time to New York. Sittler was touted by THN and others as the safest pick in the draft. Also, no could have predicted the serious injuries that would derail his career.

Bowen was a guy with a huge frame and perceived potential that simply never panned out. Both in junior hockey and pros, he kept getting shuttled back and forth from defense to wing and never really developed at either spot because he lacked hockey sense. But he did have an OK rookie year (as a defenseman) for the Flyers all things considered. When Terry Murray came in as coach, he didn't like what he saw. Bowen went down to the minors, shuttled back and forth a few more times between forward and D and never panned out.

It should also be said that the Flyers 1990, 1991 and 1993 drafts under Russ Farwell were good ones.

I don't think anyone cried over Hartnell leaving. He was well liked and was a decent player. I think people were upset that they traded him for a 4th line player with 3 years $4.6M left on his deal

Actually, the line on the game is this: Will Hartnell score two goals and take one undisciplined penalty, score one goal with two bad penalties or just take three penalties?

90-Ricci, Simon, Renberg and Therien
91-Forsberg and Yuchkevich
93-Niinimaa and Prospal

the 90 hockey news draft preview had Bob Clarke saying the player he liked the most in the draft was Jagr. what could have been. Love Lindros so I don't regret having him here at all but just imagine Brindy, Forsberg, Jagr, Renberg and either LeClair or Recchi. not too shabby
