also Scott12,

I have a question for you (and also Howard).

we have our first game of the season coming up and I'm doing my lines.

if all kids show up I have 4 D and 9 forwards.

here's (are) my problem(s)

I used my 4 strongest skaters at D in our exhibition game. I can't use them again as I have to balance out out ice time.

if I make 3 lines, should I put the three strongest skaters together?

concern is that if I make a line with the three weakest, they'll never touch the puck but if I put a weaker one on a line with stronger ones, they'll never touch the puck anyway.

- dt99999

Must ask this question first:

Do you and the other coach purposely put weaker kids out against weaker kids, or is that not done in this league?

I know her personally. Very nice and a bit naive. Fun to hang out with.

no, the goal is to also make sure weaker kids get to the point where they can play against the stronger ones so to amke them play against them.

Iwill be suing the Guy Carbonneau method of rolling my three lines in order and for the same amount of time.

Load up the line.
If you put 1 strong player on each line he's likely the only one touching the puck on that line anyway.
The 3 strong players together may share it better because theyre capable of doing so.

Reminds me...my nephew is playing in Novice, they had just enough players to make one team this year, so the rules says they are automatically in "A". They are clearly not of calibre, they should probably play in "B". They are losing every game, and asked for a derogation to be dropped in B, but they were told they weren't getting trounced enough to get it.

Lone factor of that is that their goalie is good. Last week, the father of the goalie in the level above had a fit with the coaches for whatever reason, and was asked to never set foot in the arena again. So as a result, he pulled his son off the team and they are now stuck without a goalie. So, they picked my nephew's team goalie to play there.

Let's say that Saturday's game wasn't pretty...they stopped counting goals after 7. The kids are pissed off and discouraged. It's going to be a long season.

keep the three strongest together and then try and come up with the most even 2nd and 3rd lines based on who is left.

There were always poopty players on the team who sometimes didn't touch the puck for weeks. It happens at that age. A lot.

I wouldn't sweat it too much; just get the kids in an equal rotation and hope they get better as the season moves along.

Well, in my experience, putting three weaker kids on a line together does them absolutely no good whatsoever. Putting one better kid on each line will allow the puck to at least get out of your zone and into the offensive zone, thus creating a way for all three to play both ways. If the three are weak, and go up against a strong line, they will never touch the puck. If the two weaker ones are with the stronger one, the puck will find them as well.

That's great in theory, but the parents of the other kids will be calling for Dan's head because their kids are always out there watching the other team fill their net.

There is no winning (for the coach) when it comes to minor hockey.

My son's team kills and gets killed. Played Miroslav Satan's kid's team Saturday afternoon, and lost 15-4 I believe. Then yesterday morning, they won 8-1 against a team from Brooklyn. At that age, win some lose some and learn hockey, at least at the travel level.
