oh good. G's out, like we all knew he would be. "fine", "not fine".
hextall: "here's what happened. we lied at first. now we can't. so there's that."
days will definitely turn into at least a week, if not more.
and i can't wait to see umberger on a unit with schenn and voaracek. |

That's understandable. But this is the second time this year, that something along this line has happened. They told us Coburn was almost back, then out 4 weeks. Giroux was fine last night, now he's not fine. I really think the Flyers should take a more cautious approach so that they aren't caught in the unpredictable nature of injuries and medical diagnosis. - MJL

I won't see it.
Actually, I will see it. I'll see 2 of those lines.
2 of everything, as a matter of fact.
What I'm trying to say is that if G misses an extended period of time I'll drink a lot when I watch the games. |

If we traded for Jake Muzzin, Jake Gardiner, Jake Allen, and Jake Virtanen, and then sign Jake Hansen...
...I don't know what. But we'd have a full line of Jake's. - jmatchett383
this reminds me of my high school intramural volleyball team: 8 guys named al. none of us were named al. true story. i can tell it again if you want. |

to bill's blog, re: lindros/forsberg
the flyers likely don't win a cup with forsberg everything else being exactly the same. they just weren't deep enough despite a few supremely talented players. it's a terrible shame neither player won here, yet embodies everything that has haunted this franchise since the mid 80s.
i'll also say that if quebec hadn't relocated to colorado there is ZERO chance patrick roy ends up on the avs in that inaugural season. it boggles my mind how a single game had such an enormous impact on the course of nhl history. my point being without patrick, colorado likely doesn't win the cup not once but twice, and the hindsight comparisons to lindros are significantly less one-sided.
so...i blame mario tremblay, even though the story is that roy was starting to let the montreal market/media etc get to him and mike vernon told him that day before the game he needed to get himself traded. he didn't get along with the coach anyway...so who knows how it would have gone done had it not been that shellacking he took that night. if had happened at the deadline or after the season, it just as likely could have been another team. either way, if quebec had stayed put, he wouldn't have been traded there, that's for damn sure. |

of course. the rangers have not been very good this season. i look forward to tomorrow night's game being the springboard to their recovery. look for a goose egg from captain mattress and a couple of goals from the troll and san lewey a piece, and probably another key flyers injury. |

I think they were deep enough in 1995-96, actually. Should have beaten Florida for sure. Not sure if they'd have beaten Colorado if they got to the Finals but it probably would have been a hell of a series.

I agree they didn't expect Umberger to be better than Hartnell, but I do think they felt getting Umberger was better than getting nothing at all (which, if we had to dump the contract, I would've preferred at this point). Speaking just to Hartnell's trade value, I think they could've done better, but instead it looks as though they jumped on their first chance to "get rid of the problem".
Hartnell undoubtedly has his warts, but the reasoning (which I think you're probably right about) is mean and weak. - BulliesPhan87

that is actually shocking, accept for one thing - all teams should know that putting in their #2 significantly increases their odds of winning against the flyers.
the last time i remember a goalie other than csp against the flyers is when gagne scored 7 seconds into OT at msg with kevin weeks in goal during the 2005-6 season. it's possible biron got a game or two, but i don't recall. |

Honestly, I don't have enough information to know that. They were taking on a potential problem in return. I think that Hextall is a smart enough hockey guy, that if there was a better deal out there, he would've taken it. And I think it's possible that maybe the better deal was to simply keep Hartnell. I honestly think the culture change was, and is a big deal to Hextall and Berube. - MJL
Is it weird I can't take this "culture change" serious coming from two guys who took a lot of penalties in their playing days? Hextall was a goalie but he took enough penalties as a goaltender to say he took too many. |

BLOG UPDATE
Flyers captain Claude Giroux is day-to-day with a lower-body injury per Flyers general manager Ron Hextall. Speaking to the media via conference call from the NHL general manager meetings in Toronto, Hextall said that Giroux would definitely miss tomorrow night's game against the Rangers and is also more likely than not to be out of the lineup for Thursday's game against Minnesota. Hextall said that Giroux's injury happened at practice yesterday.
The general manager said that the player's condition worsened overnight.
"Here’s what happened," said Hextall. "He was examined last night by a doctor and everything looked good at that time. Between last night and this morning, he wasn’t feeling the same way so he talked to Jimmy - bmeltzer[McCrossin, the Flyers trainer] and got further testing and just feels he needs a little time off to get better."
Giroux's streak of 146 consecutive regular season games played will come to an end tomorrow. Hextall reiterated that the club expects his absence from the lineup to be a matter of days, not weeks. Saturday's game against Columbus seems to be a possibility for his return as of now.
The Flyers, when it comes to injuries, are like the Nixon White House. Cover it up & worry about disclosure later, and then only if we absolutely need to do so.

Berube said Umberger has size, so that's good. I suppose. He doesn't do much good with it. |

So we are starting to recognized in just a little over a year of Berube coaching and five months of Hextall being GM, very little truths are told? They definitely bully their players with signs... |

I don't see it as a coverup issue, but more of a PR issue. I don't believe that Hextall was trying to mislead anyone. He just needs to leave himself room if things change.
Hextall should've said something along the lines of. Giroux suffered an LBI in practice today. Initial diagnosis shows that it's nothing serious, but he will be further evaluated in the morning, to see how it progresses. And we'll update when we get more information. |
