Tyson Barrie is another example, Rangers were trying to get him for Del Zotto (thank god that trade didn't go through).

From 2011 until mid last year he was being bounced around from the AHL, play a few games, then healthy scratched, just to be sent back down again...eventually after 3 seasons of that crap they give him a chance to earn his full time spot and has been looking solid ever since.

Imagine how terrible that would have looked to give up on him after never really giving him a fair chance to earn his full time spot. Same as MM, just keep onto him

In what world are you getting Phaneuf for a prospect dman and a guy with 60 games on his contract? I know he's a leaf and overpaid, but that's ridiculous.
- Morris

I just mean roster wise not asset wise. EDM's D depth isn't great as is. Losing their best left and right shot D for Phaneuf would hurt more than it helps.

Ah. I see. But I reiterate what I said to Iggy that if you're really looking at it in the context of how management and coaching is currently handling these guys:

Marincin doesn't play for the Oilers currently. He sits in the Oilers pressbox. In the immediate go ahead, there's no indication they have greater plans for him.

Petry will in all likelihood not be an Oiler in 60 games time. He's in Hemsky territory.

It's easy enough to say "well they should re-sign Petry longterm and realize Marincin is a great young dman", but they're not realistically going to get conked on the head and completely flip a switch on how they see those two. With that in mind, Phaneuf arguably has a far greater benefit to the Oilers over the next, say at least 200 games, than those two.

Yeah I don't get that much at all. Maybe they're putting in Pinizotto to fight Kassian? then why not that idiot Gazdic?

No one wants to lose a trade. And if we make one, that's a gamble we need to be prepared to make.

But we cant just continue to sit on our heels and lose cause said player has potential.

Seriously, this will be 5 years of bottom feeding for hall and eberle.
If they aren't demanding trades, they might be ruined as a group anyways.

If I can avoid moving eberle/klefbom/marincin, that's great. But if I can't and I have an opportunity for a top pairing guy. I take it. And even the high potential of those kids turning out, They ain't gonna be top pairing guys for at least a couple years. How long do people think we should be waiting? It just doesn't work this way imo.
We need to do something.

I also completely disagree with thoughts of keeping the draft pick cause it might be a great player. Or the next 'saviour'.
At the very least if we're gonna wait, deal the pick when we know what it is as we have a better idea of value.
but if we're set on McEichelfin, than absolutely move one of ebs/yaks/prospect defenders for help.
but if it were up to me, I'd take the lesser package for it now and hope it provides some wins/confidence

Pinizzotto brings more of an edge against stupid Canuck players. Eakins way of saying he just wanted reward one of his players who has been working his ass off.

Look at that part of the trade from Toronto's side. 7 more years of our Captain for 60 games from a 2nd pairing defender and a prospect who may or may not turn out. I think they'd hang up the phone.

I'm not saying we should make that trade or even target Phaneuf but just look at what it would cost us to get a top pairing defenseman who isn't even top 15 at his position.

Side note; I don't see a huge benefit in Phaneuf for both petry and marincin. But marincin or klefbom, plus a nikitin and or a solid pick?
Absolutely.

This is pretty much how I feel.

Maybe I'm desperate, but I'd rather see Eberle score 5 goals against us for his new team to knock us out of the 1st round then another year or two of bottom feeding.

Philosophically, even if you give up more value, so long as we get better how can you call it 'losing a trade'?

That's a big key for me.
yaks can score 35 elsewhere. As long as we improve in the areas we need to.
maybe 5 years down the line, we'll be looking at a star sniper with envy, but if we're in a different echelon of the league, it doesn't matter.

and of course you're desperate. This franchise is desperate.
We're not even talking a middle of the road team that cant get over the hump. We're talking about one of the worst few teams in the league again. For the 5th year in a row. Like 15 games below .500 bad. I know how frustrated and low confidence I have watching this team play. Can u imagine the players? There is no more lessons or learning coming from continued losses.
I'd also like to add that I don't think we're that far off. A few pieces and we could get to a level respectability.
But our draisaitl's, klefbom, chase's, nursrs' s are all multiple years away.

And I would say even more-so McDavid/Eichel/Hannafin or whoever our 1st yields.

I was never expecting to get them. They've never worn the copper and blue. I never thought they'd be necessary for this team to win a cup. So I wouldn't lose sleep if we got better and some other team got them.

Especially since we're not talking about trading McDavid. We're talking about trading a pick that if the lottery was held today would yield a 11.5% chance of being McDavid. In fact, if we win tonight, it'd be an 8.5% chance.

Yeah, and don't get me wrong.

Long term I think we can make a splash now and still put a lot of stock in Draisaitl, Chase and at least two of Nurse, Klefbom and Marincin.

This team, to me, is a veteran top pairing dman + a long term 3C away from perennial playoff contention. I feel like everything else is sort of in the pipeline.
