You realize that hockey is a team sport right? While you have 2 elite forwards, that doesn't mean your entire team is overall more talented. Florida hands down has more offensive depth. And their 5th defenseman (and probably 6th) would be a top pairing defender on the flyers. - RAGSareDANGERus

ES minutes/ES Points = Minutes per ESP
Simmonds 235/5 = 47
Read 239/5 = 47.8
Lecavalier 117/2 = 58.5
Umberger 205/3 = 68.33
- Feanor
You just have to laugh at that -- seriously, those who understand exactly what that means, you are laughing at that. I took Bellemare and Rinaldo out because I don't expect them to score -- while it would be nice if they did, I don't expect them to. (Whether the Flyers should look to upgrade is another question.)
But those guys I left bolded? You have to laugh. Laugh to keep from crying, of course -- because that's not getting it done, no matter what team you root for

Is it because the Flyers aren't playing well that right now i feel like Simmonds is just a niche player? Good on PP and in front of net but nothing much else? Would you trade him if it allowed for a more skilled winger? |

It does make you wonder how Couturier became the focus of today's discussion. |

I think that estimate is a bit high...his career high for goals is 13, so to expect him to put 25 in and be the top defensive center on the team might be asking too much. Bergeron and Kopitar have had 20+ goals in every season when they've been healthy. Even Jordan Staal, whom many compare him to, has had 4 20+ goal seasons, so I don't feel he has the ability to finish. I sure would love to be wrong though - aantny88
Needs to be better on the PP and his goal total will climb. He has never scored a power play goal. Bergeron averages 6 per 82 games, Kopitar 9, Staal 3. I'm assuming the former two have had more PP throughout their career than Staal and Couturier.
Either way, Couturier hasn't really been deployed as anything but a third line shutdown center throughout his entire career and so far he has down his job tremendously. He'll need more offense-friendly match-ups in the future with more skilled linemates consistently to produce like the others. |

The guy is devastating on the PP, and that is not something to be ignored.
But if I thought I could get a player who scored consistently at ES, personally, you have to look at that pretty strongly

Define "more skilled winger."
Jamie Benn - absolutely
Alex Ovechkin - absolutely
Joffrey Lupul - nay
James Neal - nay |

That is how i feel today. I would seriously have to think about it if i get a more skilled winger who can score more ES goals. i think you could put Couturier on 1st unit in front and get about the same outcome on PP |

I don't. Simmonds has more of a mean streak, and I think he drives the net harder. Coots is bigger, but he doesn't "attack" like Simmonds does, if that makes any sense. When Simmonds gets the puck down low on the PP, he's perfectly happy to run a guy over and ram it into the net, where I think Coots uses his size to set up a more finesse play. |

No, definitely no, no, maybe.
Edit: No to Kredier, only because of divisional play. |

Really? I had no idea hockey was a team sport? Name me one forward on Florida that is better than the Flyers top 6. Who's it going to be? Jussi Jokinen? Brad Boyes? Give me a break... |

He said the Panthers had more depth (debateable), and that they had 5/6 defenseman who would be top pair defenders on the Flyers. Never said they had players better than the Flyers' top forwards. |

He's scored 41.1% of his points on the PP so he's sort of a PP specialist in a way but I think if he played with a playmaking center or LW, he would be much better off at ES. He is a supporting player, not a guy that's going to create space. |
