it's very very easy to fall into the logical trap that "because the oilers are bad, every move they made lead to them being bad".

Hopefully, you can see the flaw in this reasoning, but if not I'll spell it out:
1) It doesn't allow that some moves could have been positive, and some moves
2) It leads to the equally fallacious argument that "if the Oilers make a move and it doesn't immediately lead to them being good, then it's a bad move".

Now, some of the arguments here have even taken #2 a step further, by arguing:
"If the Oilers made a move and it didn't immediately lead them to being good, then it's self-evident that any other move would have generated a better outcome".

This has been an astonishing day for patch-work arguments. We're already at an up it's ass argument that's up another up it's ass argument's ass, up another up it's ass argument's ass. Can we go one step further?

When Dean Lombardi felt the LA Kings were ready to take that next step he traded the likes of 5th overall pick Brayden Schenn, 3rd overall pick Jack Johnson, 2nd round pick Wayne Simmonds, a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick for the Richards and Carter.

Granted they had Kopitar & Quick for six years, as well as a few others, but they made the move and it put them over the top...and it worked. Maybe the Oilers need to do the same?

You guys think they're at that point? Not to win a Cup but to take that next step and compete for a playoff spot.

They also had Doughty, Dustin Brown, Williams, Scuds and Mitchell when they could still play, Stoll, Greene, Voynov and Penner playing well as a supporting cast. We arguably have some half-assed versions of some of those pieces

Mind you, I take it you're proposing floating picks and prospects to acquire the Doughty part of the equation. And I'm all for it.

It may not be anything special but it is surprising. Acton seemed to be well liked by management and had serious connections with the coaching staff. Maybe it's a sign of more things to come. Doubtful. But still.
